The purpose of this study was to develop the checklist for therapist’s self-monitoring of Play Therapy. The total numbers of 242 questions were selected from the previous studies on the relevant topics and grouped into five categories with and fifteen subcategories on the checklist. Due to the lack of content validity, of these initial 242 questions, 110 questions were eliminated and 132 questions were included into the final checklist.
The results were as follows: First, the five major areas a therapist should focus included Joining with Child, Response Skills in Play, Dealing with Resistance, Dealing with Transference and Counter-Transference, and Child’s Adaptation. Second, the five major areas were divided into the 15 subcategories. The area of Joining with Child was divided into the 3 subcategories: Understanding Cases, Positive Emotional Experiences, and Setting Limitation. Response Skills in Play were classified into 2 subcategories including Nonverbal Response Skills and Verbal Response Skills. The area of Dealing with Resistance included Silence and Resistance with Withdrawal, Behavioral Resistance, and Skills of Dealing with Resistance. Dealing with Transference and Counter-transference comprised of Transference, Internal Counter-Transference, External Counter-Transference, and Dealing with Counter-Transference. And, the area of Child’s Adaptation was made up with Child’s Progress on Adaptation, Skills of Helping Child to Adapt, and Termination Signal. Third, using the Content Validity Index (CVI) of expert group, the 132 items were assigned to the specific areas and subcategories. The 19 items were assigned in the first area of Joining with Child: 7 items in Case-Understanding, 6 in Positive Emotional Experiences, and 6 in Setting up Limitation. The area of Response Skills in Play included 6 items of Nonverbal Response Skills and 13 of Verbal Response Skills. Of the 21 items in the area of Dealing with Resistance, 9 items were listed in the Silence and Withdrawal, 6 in Behavioral Resistance, and 6 in Dealing with Resistance. The 37 items in Dealing with Transference and Counter-Transference included 9 Child’s Transference Response, 7 in Internal Counter-Transference, 10 in External Counter-Transference, and 11 in Dealing with Counter-Transference. There were 36 items in the area of Child’s Adaptation including 15 items on Child’s Progress in Adaptation, 8 items of Skills in Helping Children to Adapt, and 13 items of Termination Signal. The self-monitoring questions were made up of ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ format. Using the self-monitoring checklist, a therapist can provide children with appropriate help through the supervision. Overall, the 132 items in five therapeutic areas with 15 subcategories in checklist were designed for therapists to self-monitor during the Play Therapy process in the integrated model. While the existing assessment tools for Play Therapy focus on observing child’s behaviors and testing a part of counseling processes, the checklist from the current study was designed to deal with the general therapeutic areas as the integrative model. In conclusion, the designed checklists, especially, consider child’s unique development characteristics as being important and can provide children with multidimensional and integrative interventions. That is, for children at 3 to 9 years, a therapist can look into their emotion, cognition and behaviors in the integrated model using the Self-Monitoring checklist. It is expected that the checklist for self-monitoring in the study can be easily utilized by the beginning therapist to enhance effects of therapy by informing what to check and how to react children during the session.
