이를 통해 각 사업의 장단점을 비교하였으며 여기에 참조할 만한 추가적 사례로 미국의 ‘National Endowment for the Arts(NEA)', 영국의 'Arts Council England(...

This dissertation aims to search mid-term and long-term development program by analyzing present situation of supporting business for domestic original musical. Having grown steadily since ‘Phantom of the Opera’ in 2001, the domestic musical market stagnated in the middle of 2010s’. Several causes lie under this stagnation, but the largest problem is the degraded quality of original work caused by excessive pursuit of license musical. Although public institutions like ARKO & KOCCA are respectively operating relevant supporting businesses such as ‘Cradle of Creation’ and ‘Story Writer Debut Program’, long-term performance is difficult because the program goals are focused on short-term success. Thus, this study analyzes ‘Stage Up’ of CJ Culture Foundation and ‘Wooran Yisang’ of Wooran Culture Foundation, private support programs. The merit and demerit of each business is compared. As additional cases, I examine the video game industry and the film industry which have received long time support, and ‘NEA’ in the US and ‘ACE’ in the UK. To reflect the actual responses in the field, the following 4 questions for study were asked to 21 experts.
1. What is the present situation of supporting programs for original musicals? 2. What is the present situation and result of supporting business that cultivates creative manpower? 3. Are the goal and operation of supporting business that cultivate manpower feasible now? 4. What are detailed ways to improve supporting programs to cultivate manpower?
This study largely draws 5 improvement methods. First, as supporting programs is directed towards creators, it should be specifically programs enhancing expertise of the mentoring system. Second, supporting programs which concentrate on cultivating new creators should expand their target to include semi-established creators. Third, although it is important for creators to develop scripts, the role of 2nd creators who create work on the basis of those scripts is also important in order to make more better performances. Thus support should be provided in connection with them. Fourth, the length of supporting programs needs to be flexibly adjusted for work scale instead of uniform standard of 1 year. Fifth, it is necessary to consolidate vertically operated institutions & businesses and to establish a dedicated institution. This study is meaningful in that it analyzes diverse cases besides musical genre and it is distinct from preceding studies, which concentrate on case study or literature studies through interviews with many experts directly/indirectly connected to musical supporting business. However, some data and interviewees cannot be directly quoted or are not easily accessible, due to confidentiality of public institutions and related know-how of private institutions. Since this is one of the factors which impede mid-term and long-term development of performing arts, quantitative study also needs to be implemented with constant update through integrated EDPS network.
