The purpose of this study was to develop a program aimed at reducing juvenile delinquency and enhancing social problem-solving skills, emotion regulation skills and self-control skills, and further to assess the effectiveness of the program. This program adopted the form of Role-Playing Game (RPG), a game genre, to increase motivation in addition to improving the effectiveness of the therapy. This study was conducted with 36 adolescents with delinquent behavior and 18 of their homeroom teachers in middle schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. Adolescents with delinquent behavior and their homeroom teachers were randomly assigned to experimental group or comparison group. Experimental group received RPG form of cognitive behavioral group therapy, and comparison group received problem-solving group therapy. Teachers in the experimental group received education about how to guide their students following every therapy session while teachers in the comparison group did not receive any education. Outcome variables including delinquent behavior, social problem-solving skills, emotion regulation skills, and self–control skills were assessed at baseline, post-treatment, and one month follow-up. At post-treatment, the RPG form of cognitive behavioral therapy reduced delinquent behavior and increased social problem-solving skills, emotion regulation skills, and self–control skills, and these effects were significantly larger than the comparison group. Also, these changes remained at one month follow-up. Moreover, the experimental group reported higher levels of satisfaction for the treatment program than the comparison group. The findings of this study suggest that this RPG form of cognitive behavioral group therapy program is effective in reducing adolescent delinquency and improving techniques and strategies associated with delinquency, and motivating delinquent adolescents to engage more actively in treatment.
