In this paper, the design optimization of the vehicle’s B-pillar structure using correlation analysis between side crashworthiness and side body stiffness is performed for improving side crashworthiness. Based on Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) side crash test protocol, a finite element model for computer simulation is developed. The model verification is carried out by comparing side crash simulation result with side crash test result. Side crash analysis is carried out to figure out crucial parts which are chosen by sensitivity about B-pillar intrusion. Based on crash analysis result, B-pillar reinforcement, inner panel and side sill are selected. Selected part is divided eight section for figuring out correlation between side body stiffness of section and side crashworthiness. Sensitivity analysis to detect effective design variables is performed. As a result, effective design variables are cross section of the B-pillar lower reinforcement, B-pillar upper reinforcement, thickness of B-pillar reinforcement and thickness of B-pillar inner panel. The objective function of optimization problem is minimizing mass and constraint are distance between B-pillar and center of driver seat. To develop the optimization function, RSM(Response Surface Method) is conducted. Optimal solution is derived by using optimization function and the optimal design is validated by side crash analysis. Comparison of initial model and optimized model is carried out and finally, mass are decreased and side crashworthiness is improved.
