After discussing basic theoretical concepts, in chapter 3, this thesis classifies Korean conjoined sentences into three types in terms of Sweetser(1990)’s conjunction domain - ‘conjoined sentences in content domain’, ‘those in epistemic domain’, and ‘those in speech act domain’ - and investigates which domain connective endings can be used in, and what the grammatical characteristics of each type are. The results are as follows; First, in case of conditional conjunction, connective endings ‘-umyen(으면)’ and ‘-damyen(다면)’ can be used in all types of conjunction domain, however, ‘-gedun(거든)’ is used in content and speech act domain, and ‘-deramyen(더라면)’ is used only in epistemic domain. ‘-damyen(다면)’ has some constraints; it cannot be used in content domain when the protasis has generic meaning or means spatio-temporal setting, whose hypothetical meanings are very weak, and also cannot be used in speech act conditionals in case not anaphoric. Second, in case of concessive conjunction, connective endings ‘-edo(어도)’ and ‘-derado(더라도)’ can be used in all types of conjunction domain, however, ‘-uljirado(을지라도)’ and ‘-undul(은들)’ are used in content and epistemic domain, and ‘-essdendul(었던들)’ is used only in epistemic domain. Third, in case of causal conjunction, connective ending ‘-unikka(으니까)’ can be used in all types of conjunction domain, however, ‘-umuro(으므로)’ is used in content and epistemic domain, and ‘-ese(어서)’ and ‘-nurago(느라고)’ is used only in epistemic domain. Fourth, in case of contrastive conjunction, there is no content conjunction. Connective ending ‘-jiman(지만)’ can be used in content and speech act domain. However, written style ending ‘-una(으나)’ is mainly used in epistemic domain, and possible in speech act domain only when it is used for the purpose of saying in a less spoken style. ‘-unama(으나마)’ also is mainly used in epistemic domain, and possible only when the speaker says differently from real situation or his/her inner thought for the purpose of politeness. ‘-genman(건만)’ is used only in epistemic domain. Fifth, in case of enumerative(or additive) conjunction, threre is no epistemic conjunction. Connective ending ‘-go(고)’ can be used in content and speech act domain. However, ‘-umye(으며)’ and ‘-umyense(으면서)’ are used only in content domain. ‘-geniwa(거니와)’ is mainly used in content domain, and possible in speech act domain only when the speaker repeats already mentioned things. In Chapter 4, on the base of the discussion in chapter 3, it was shown that there are differences in tense system of the conjoined clause, the choice of connective ending, and prosodic realization, according to conjunction domain. The results are as follows; First, in case of coordination, the relation of the conjoined clauses is syntactically independent, and so the coordinated clauses use absolute tense system whose reference point is utterance time. However, in case of subordination, the syntactic relation between conjoined clauses are different according to conjunction domain. The subordinated clauses in content domain are syntactically dependent, and therefore use relative tense system whose reference point is the event time of matrix sentence. When two clauses are conjoined in epistemic and speech domain, the relation between them are more independent, and thus the subordinated clauses use absolute tense system in spite of its being subordination. Second, causal connective endings ‘-ese(어서)’, ‘-nurago(느라고)’, and additive/enumerative ‘-umye(으며)’ and ‘-umyense(으면서)’ are used only in content domain, but conditional ‘-deramyen(더라면)’, concessive ‘-essdendul(었던들)’, and contrastive ‘-genman(건만)’ are used only in epistemic domain. There are connective endings which are typically used in one conjunction domain, though possible in more than two conjunction domain; additive/enumerative ‘-geniwa(거니와)’ typically in content domain, contrastive ‘-una(으나)’ and ‘-unama(으나마)’ typically in epistemic domain. This shows Korean has, at least partially, typical connective endings according to conjunction domain. Third, in case of subordination in content domain, it is natural to pronounce without pause between conjoined clauses, as long as there is no special intention. However, in case of subordination in epistemic and speech act domain, it is possible to pronounce with pause between conjoined clauses, and subordinated clauses can be pronounced with falling tone. This is also due to the fact that the relations of conjoined clauses in epistemic and speech act domain are more independent. Korean can be said to have differences in prosodic realization of subordinated clauses according to conjunction domain. This thesis has shown that Korean conjoined sentences can be classified according to the conjunction domain, and on the base of conjunction domain it explained some grammatical differences which were not explained or neglected in earlier studies. Notwithstanding, this thesis has many limits; it didn’t deal with some important connective endings, for example, ‘-unde(은데)’, ‘-daga(다가)’, etc, and it didn’t try to investigate the frequency of usages in each conjunction domain, and so on. We hope these will be clarified by more detailed studies.
