The purpose of study is to provide information in regards to understanding adaptation to kindergartens in early stages and finding suitable guidelines. The basis of the study will be focused on the analysis on instructive operations performed by teachers for children in early stage of adaptation aged from one to three and the perception of the teachers. The study agendas were selected as follows in regards to above basis.
Study 1. What are the current and actual operational basis in terms of adaptation for early stage 3-year-old child? Study 2. How do teachers perceive on guidelines in terms of adaptation for early stage 3-year-old child?
Study subjects were 186 kindergarten teachers from S City and K Provinces. For reliable data gathering, subjected teachers were limited to the ones with experience of caring for 3 - year - old children.
Data were collected from survey sheets designed to gather information on current conditions and operations handling early stage of adaptation of children the kindergartens. Survey was done for six weeks from April 25th,2018 to June 6th,2018. The method of data gathering was done with the consent of subjects. Survey questions were filled out and gathered either directly from the subject in person or from e-mails sent out with questionnaires.
The data were analyzed by SPSS 22.0 computer software for calculating percentages, average and standard deviations. Also, χ²-test were used to find out background variances of the kindergarten teachers (educational background, educational experiences).
The results of this research are summarized as follows.
First, the result in regards to ‘teacher training experience’ revealed that more than half of kindergarten teachers did not have any training sessions or experiences for guiding early adaptation of 3 - year - old child.
The result regards to ‘class management’ revealed that many of the programs developed for early adaptation of children were not in application due to the absence of the program. More than half of the kindergartens from the subject group held shortened classes for the first week at the beginning of the class after the admission. The survey also revealed that less than half of the kindergartens in the subject group did not have assistant teachers to help children ease into the classes.
In regards to ‘guidelines for supervisions and contents for education’, the study showed subjected teachers aim to give positive attitude for children coming to the kindergartens. Also, for better adaptation for children, the physical environment of the classroom were set with familiar tools and activities.
Many of the teachers valued and put importance on planning activities that may ease children to help adapt to the new surroundings. For this, many teachers have children choose their own activities and share names through ‘store sharing session’.
Many of the activities consisted of doings that can create intimacy between friends and teachers and also revealed that activities are planned from advises and experiences either from their senior teachers or coworkers.
In regards to ‘parenting educations and guiding children’, many of the teachers interact individually to help child feel secure for the children with difficulties adapting to kindergartens.
Many answered that a method to help child with difficulties separating from their parents is to have the parents return home at once for child to participate in daily activities. More than half of parents with the children having difficulty easing into the school were given phone interviews.
Second, in perspective of ‘’Class Operations and Difficulties’ revealed that 98.9% of the teachers from the subject group perceive the importance of having educational programs for helping early stage adaptation. Also revealed that ‘Adaptation to Daily Program’ is the most important part of adaptation and most effective activity is ‘Free-will Choice Activity’
More than half of the group answered the hardest part of daily routine work both for child and teacher is separating child from their parents coming in and out of kindergarten.
Many perceived that the main obstacle for adaptation is ‘Differences in New Environment’ and to overcome requires ‘parenting education with close cooperation of families and kindergartens’ and ‘manpower support’. In regards to ‘needs for teacher training’, 91.9% of the teachers from the subject group felt the need of training. Many required the content of the training to be about ‘Teacher-Child Interactions’ and ‘Parenting Educations’.
In conclusion, this study examined and analyzed that kindergarten teacher’s awareness and operation status on adaptation of three-year-old children to kindergarten were somewhat different up to kindergarten teacher's background variable.
The result of this study is expected to provide a significant basic data for understanding and finding a way to teach about a suitable adaptation based on age in educational practice.
