A formation of the body image of adolescents is an important element of the self concept. It is likely to have a negative influence on the self-concept formation of adolescents who will become members of society in the future. This study considers a formation of the body image as important concept for young people and investigates the use of social media which is able to influence the body image. The subjects of this study were 505 adolescents living in Gyeonggi-do. This study tries to prove that the image and concept of the body provided by social media would affect the dissatisfaction of the body. We examine Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube and verifies the effects of social media on body dissatisfaction through thin-ideal internalization, upward comparison, and fat talk. Research shows that the hours of Facebook use and the hours of YouTube use do not affect body dissatisfaction and do not affect mediating effects. The hours of Instagram use show a direct effect on the body dissatisfaction although the mediation effect is not shown in this study. In addition, the use of beauty and health genre on YouTube has been found to affect body dissatisfaction, with thin-ideal internalization, upward comparisons, and fat talk being affected by full mediation. As a result, the more the adolescents use Instagram, the more they and the more the use of YouTube beauty and the health genre, the more the body dissatisfaction improves. Furthermore, the more the adolescents use the beauty and health genre on YouTube, the more the body dissatisfaction increases through thin-ideal internalization, upward comparison and fat talk. This study examined the effects of social media on the body dissatisfaction through various platforms rather than individual social media platforms. In addition, related research has mainly been conducted on women and college students, but this study is meaningful as a study involving teenagers and men. This study has the limitations that need for more sophisticated variable settings for social media usage and the need for elaborate setting of the relationships among media variables.
