The objective of this study is to examine actual conditions and childhood teachers’perception of early childhood education by means of multimedia in childhood education centers. Actual conditions of multimedia that have emerged after the 4th Industrial Evolution as well as those previously available are analyzed in relation to general backgrounds of teachers, and their perception of multimedia-based education is examined with the aim to present educational implications and ways of utilization of multimedia for children which can be useful basic information on multimedia for future study.
To this end, the following research subjects have been chosen:
Research Subject 1:"What are the actual conditions of early childhood education by means of multimedia?" Research Subject 2:"How childhood teachers view early childhood education by means of multimedia?"
This study was conducted among 284 childhood teachers taking care of 0 to 5 year old children at kindergartens and daycare centers (180 kindergarten teachers and 104 daycare center teachers) located in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Chungnam Province, Jeonbuk Province, and Jeonnam Province. As to the research tool to analyze actual conditions and childhood teachers' perception of early childhood education by means of multimedia, a questionnaire was developed and used. This survey was conducted for 4 weeks from September 14 to October 12, 2018. Collected statistical data was analyzed by means of SPSS 21.0 and then verified with the significance level of p<.05, p<.01, and p<.001. Additionally, teachers' general backgrounds and use frequency regarding each questionnaire item were examined. As to teachers' backgrounds, -test was conducted.
Findings regarding this research subject are as below:
First, as 'actual conditions of early childhood education by means of multimedia' were examined, it turned out that teachers used multimedia '3 to 4 days a week,' and that majority used multimedia for '10 to 30 minutes' each time. Many used multimedia 'when they were necessary for classes.' Teachers used multimedia mostly in the 'introductory step' of the class. As to how they learned the ways of utilizing multimedia, most of them 'searched themselves.' To the question about training experiences regarding multimedia, the majority responded, 'No.' Most of respondents who had attended a multimedia training program answered that they were 'satisfied' with it. Regarding how to utilize multimedia, it turned out that during the day, respondents used 'computers' while children were going to school, in free choice activities, talking to one another freely, in large/small group activities, and transition activities. Respondents used 'computers' most frequently while children were going back home, 'digital cameras' while children were playing outdoors, and 'CD/cassette players' during lunch time. As to types of multimedia used, it turned out that 'computers' were used most frequently. Regarding childhood teachers' multimedia skills, most answered "Yes" to the following items: "I can make class materials by using a computer program"; "I can connect a smart-phone to a TV"; I can download, modify, and use materials via the Internet"; I can connect a beam projector and a computer"; "I can play music by using Bluetooth speakers"; I can transfer photos from a smart-phone and edit them"; "I have no problem in sending notifications by using a smart-phone"; "I can arrange home learning lessons by using smart-phones"; "I can get class materials via SNS"; and "I can find and apply for a necessary cyber training program." However, the highest percentage of respondents answered 'Not at all' to the following item: "I know how to utilize educational robots and I utilize them." Second, as 'teachers' perception of early childhood education by means of multimedia' was examined, the highest percentage of respondents answered that early childhood education by means of multimedia "is very necessary." As one major reason why early childhood education by means of multimedia is necessary, respondents answered "In order to enhance learning effects." As to childhood teachers' interests in early childhood education by means of multimedia, the highest percentage answered "Very much interested." As to their recognition of effectiveness, the highest percentage answered "Effective." As respondents were asked about their view regarding new multimedia to be introduced, the majority answered "3D printers." As to their view of applicability of new multimedia to the field, the highest percentage answered "Ican apply them." To the question about difficulty in utilizing multimedia for children, the highest percentage answered "Not much." To the question regarding whether children showed interests in multimedia, the highest percentage answered "Yes." As respondents were asked about the proper age of children for multimedia use, the highest percentage answered "3 years old or older." As to purposes of multimedia use for children, the majority answered "In order to provide various materials for a certain topic." When asked about what would be necessary to promote the use of multimedia for childhood education, respondents of the highest percentage answered "To develop and distribute multimedia programs appropriate for childhood development." Regarding challenges in utilizing multimedia for childhood education, the highest percentage answered "No sufficient facilities or devices." As to the recognized necessity of teacher training programs for multimedia utilization, the highest percentage answered "Necessary." As respondents were asked about kinds of training programs for multimedia skill development, 'Cyber training sessions' were stated more than others. Additionally, the highest percentage of respondents mentioned "new methods to utilize multimedia" regarding preferred contents of such training programs. In conclusion, it is expected that findings of this study can be utilized as a basis for development of more specific methods to take advantage of multimedia, whose types and number are increasing, in the field of childhood education.
