The objective of this study was to examine factors that have effect on young children’s emotional intelligence and emotional vocabulary with study subjects of 5-year-old children and their mothers, and then work out basic data on the support of young children’s emotional development. For this, following study questions were established: 1. ‘What factors have effect on young children’s emotional intelligence?’ 1-1. ‘Is young children’s emotional intelligence different by their gender and whether they have brothers/sisters?’ 1-2. ‘Is young children’s emotional intelligence different by their mother’s academic background, employment and emotional expressivity?’ 2. ‘What factors have effect on young children’s emotional vocabulary?’ 2-1. ‘Is young children’s emotional vocabulary different by their gender and whether they have brothers/sisters?’ 2-2. ‘Is young children’s emotional vocabulary different by their mother’s academic background, employment and emotional expressivity?’ Study subjects were 73 children at early childhood educational agencies (child-care centers and kindergartens) in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do and their 73 mothers. Data of them were collected using the test tool of young children’s emotional intelligence, the test tool of young children’s emotional vocabulary, and the test tool of mother’s emotional expressivity. In order to statistically examine collected data, this study conducted independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson’s product-moment correlation analysis using the SPSS 23.0 program. Study findings are as follows: First, regarding whether young children’s gender and brothers/sisters have effect on their emotional intelligence, young children’s gender had statistically significant effect on their emotional intelligence, but their brothers/sisters did not. Second, regarding whether young children’s mother’s academic background and employment have effect on their emotional intelligence, mother’s academic background and employment had no statistically significant effect on young children’s emotional intelligence. Third, regarding whether young children’s gender and brothers/sisters have effect on young children’s emotional vocabulary, young children’s gender and brothers/sisters had no statistically significant effect on their emotional vocabulary. There was no statistical difference, but total scores and the sum of sub-areas presented the fact that girls seemed to express more emotional vocabularies than boys did. Fourth, regarding whether young children’s mother’s academic background and employment have effect on their emotional vocabulary, mother’s academic background and employment had no statistically significant effect on young children’s emotional vocabulary. Fifth, regarding the correlation between mother’s emotional expressivity and young children’s emotional vocabulary, there was no correlation between them. There was no statistically significant difference, but total scores and the sum of sub-areas presented the fact that young children whose mother was unemployed had higher emotional expressivity than young children whose mother was employed did. In addition, regarding emotional intelligence, there was no statistically significant difference, but young children whose mother was unemployed had higher emotional intelligence than young children whose mother was employed did. In conclusion, regarding young children’s factors that have effect on their emotional intelligence, their gender is an influential variable. On the other hand, regarding young children’s mother’s factors that have effect on young children’s emotional intelligence, young children’s mother’s emotional expressivity is a variable that has correlation with young children’s emotional intelligence. In addition, young children’s gender and brothers/sisters have no statistically significant effect on their emotional vocabulary, but regarding tendency, girl’s tendency of emotional vocabulary expressivity is higher than boy’s. In this vein, girl’s expressivity of emotional vocabulary seems to be higher than boy’s. Regarding mother’s factors that are related to young children’s emotional vocabulary, young children whose mother is unemployed have higher emotional expressivity than young children whose mother is employed do in total scores and the sum of sub-areas. In emotional intelligence, there is no statistical difference, but young children whose mother is unemployed have higher emotional intelligence than young children whose mother is employed do.This study verified influential factors that have effect on 5-year-old children’s emotional intelligence and vocabulary. The author hopes study findings will provide basic data to the support of young children’s emotional development.
