The purpose of this experimental research is to study the emotional development according to age by classifying representative emotion words and exploring the patterns of differentiation of emotional dimensions. For this, Research 1, 2 and 3 were conducted.
Research 1. Development of Tools for Representative Emotion words
As choosing representative emotion words is the most important when it comes to exploring inherent dimensions of emotion words, it is essential to collet proper words to be included in the list of emotion words as basic data. Since the analysis results of emotional dimensions depend on the composition of emotion words, it is necessary to collect diverse and proper words. Therefore, in Research 1, emotion words were collected according to the suggestions from preceding studies. In this research, 387 emotion words were gathered based on 5 preceding studies that selected a list of emotion words with different methods. In addition, 400 university students were recruited to repeatedly perform 9 classification tasks of emotion words based on similarities as well as hierarchical classification of the resultant words, and 387 words were contracted into 216, 61, 52 and 48 words. In order to exclude errors caused by unfamiliar emotion words, the contracted 48 emotion words were resorted with 10 elementary school students so that common words for groups of various ages could be selected. As a result, 36 representative emotion words were finally chosen. The list of major emotion words as well as that of representative emotion words were systematically and hierarchically classified according to the similarities, intensity and polarity of emotions.
Research 2. Identifying the Emotional Dimensions Inherited in Representative Emotion Words
24 university students participated in classifying the representative emotion words based on similarity and investigating the differentiation patterns of emotional dimensions inherited in the words so as to identify the dimensions. As a result, it was revealed that adults’ emotional dimensions consisted of 3 dimensions. Accordingly, adults’ first emotional dimension was named ‘pleasure-displeasure,’ the second emotional dimension as ‘activation-inactivation’ and the third emotional dimension as ‘self-orientation and other-orientation.’
Research 3. Emotional Development in the Dimension of Sentiment
In this research, the development and change of the differentiation of emotional dimensions with the increase of age were investigated from the developmental viewpoint. Following the adults’ emotional dimensions developed in Research 2, 24 elementary school students, 24 middle school students and 24 high school students participated in the exploration of emotional dimensions. As a result, the emotional dimension of the elementary school students consisted of 1 dimension, which was called ‘pleasure-displeasure.’ The middle school students’ emotions had 2 dimensions: first was named ‘pleasure-displeasure,’ the second as ‘activation-inactivation third as ‘self-orientation and other-orientation.’ Lastly, the high school students’ emotions comprised 3 dimensions: the first was called ‘pleasure-displeasure,’ the second ‘activation-inactivation’ and the third ‘self-orientation and other-orientation,’ which match with the adults’ 3-dimention emotional structure. As various differentiation patterns of emotions are discovered depending on age, it is required to study when emotions start to appear and are differentiated and developed. Emotions are present from birth and gradually differentiated with growth. Therefore, emotions in adulthood should be seen as the accumulated result of emotional development throughout the lifetime. Emotions are developed based on general changes in inner conditions accompanying physiological, cognitive and behavioral factors, and such factors interact to deliver general information on the condition of emotions through dimensional differentiation. The cranial nervous system is activated in emotional situations to stimulate a basic psychological mechanism that affects the development of emotions; with the improvement to more complex levels of cognitive ability and the expansion of various life experiences and environments, differentiated emotions gradually appear. Thus, emotional development is a process that depends on various factors; although emotions simply appear as the dimension of 'pleasure-displeasure' in the beginning, undifferentiated emotions gradually develop into differentiated emotion and become stable. This reflects the pattern that the single emotional dimension of 'pleasure-displeasure' is differentiated into multi-dimensions of 'activation-inactivation' and 'self-orientation and other-orientation.’ Based on several preceding studies, this research developed a collection of comprehensive emotion words. It is significant in that systematic and valid multi-level classification processes were performed repeatedly to sort major emotion words and that the 36 representative emotion words were finally selected. It also provides important implications in that the interaction among various factors was revealed by investigating emotional development through differentiation of the dimensions inherent in emotion words.
