The use of fossil fuels has increased dramatically due to industrialization. This has led to resource depletion and environmental pollution problems are becoming serious. The international community has agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and each country is committed to developing renewable energy to replace fossil fuels. Biodiesel is attracting attention as a means of replacing petroleum-based diesel. Among the fossil fuels, the transportation fuel has the biggest impact on society. However, vegetable oil, which is the raw material for most biodiesel, causes more unit cost for biodiesel production because of competition with food resources. Of these, spent ground coffee, a waste material, is good quality raw material substitute for existing vegetable raw materials. Spent ground coffee have a high moisture content and free fatty acid, which can be processed into biodiesel through a pretreatment process to purify the oil. Process time, cost and waste water treatment are major concerns with usage. In this study, we solved the esterification problem of unprocessed spent ground coffee, through transesterification. This was performed through irradiation amplitude, ultrasound time, amount of catalyst and methanol using the untreated coffee oil. The results of the optimal production conditions of esterification using ultrasound, analysis on fatty acid and physicochemical characterization of biodiesel produced were as follows. In the general esterification, biodiesel using KOH catalyst showed unsatisfactory biodiesel quality (FAME content 96.5% or more) with 2.0 wt% of catalyst amount, a FAME content of 87.8% at a mole ratio of oil to methanol of 1:7. The esterified biodiesel showed unsatisfactory biodiesel quality standard (FAME content 96.5% or more) with 1.5 wt% of NaOH catalyst amount. Mole ratio of oil to methanol of 1:7 showed 92.1% FAME content, and this resulted in excessive formation of emulsion and unstable yield. In the case of biodiesel produced by esterification using ultrasound, the biodiesel quality standard was satisfied with 4.5% points increased compared with the existing process. The ultrasound irradiation amplitude was 99.2 ㎛, reaction time was 30 min, a mole rate of oil to methanol was 1:7, 96.6% at 1.25 wt% of catalyst (KOH). BD yield was 74 wt% at the esterification of ultrasound irradiation, which was 17.8 wt% higher than that of the existing process. Analysis of the effect of FAME content and BD yield on biodiesel produced by ultrasound irradiation according to the irradiation amplitude, irradiation time, mole rate of oil to methanol, and catalyst amount was analyzed by one-way ANOVA. This showed that the results according to the changes in irradiation amplitude, time, and catalyst amount are significant. The physicochemical properties of biodiesel produced under the optimum conditions of esterification by ultrasound irradiation were analyzed. Most of the properties satisfied quality standards.
