With natural wetlands on the decline, rice paddies are used as alternative habitat of natural wetlands for various creatures. However, rice paddies have a lot of environmental interference from humans cultivating them, and this disturbance affects creatures living on rice paddies. In this study, I tried to find out if the environmental factors of the rice paddies affect habitat selection of Black-faced Spoonbill known to use rice paddies during breeding season. The study area of this study was on a rice paddies located on the east coast of Ganghwa Island, known as many Black-faced Spoonbill visited during breeding season. Survey was conducted three times each month from April 5 to June 27, 2017 and from April 5 to June 24, 2018. I examined the population of black-faced spoonbills and measured the water depth, rice plant height, physical form of rice paddies, biomass of potential prey. Additionally, feeding behavior of Black-faced Spoonbill was filmed to know difference of feeding behavior by environmental factors. As a result of the survey, Black-faced Spoonbills highly use study area from late April to late May, and was not found in rice paddies without water. When comparing the rice paddies that observed Black-faced Spoonbills with the rice paddies that non-observed Black-faced Spoonbills, the rice plant height, water depth, and physical form of rice paddies were no significant differences and there were only significant differences in biomass of potential prey. Number of sweeping was not related to feeding efficiency and physical form of rice paddies. Black-faced Spoonbills choose appropriate feeding method according to water depth and floor conditions, and an important factor that affects habitat selection of Black-faced Spoonbills was food. At the beginning of the Black-faced Spoonbill’s hatching period, rice paddies of Ganghwa Island showed high biomass, and its feeding efficiency and number of Black-faced Spoonbills individual also increased. This suggests that reason why black-faced spoonbills use rice paddies in breeding season is not only to reduce salt stress in their chicks, but also that feeding efficiency of rice paddies are higher than tidal flat.
