The Korean beauty service industry, which has been developing with the prosperity of the Korean economy since 2000, has developed in various forms according to consumers' needs. Behind the remarkable development, there were some issues such as damages on the scalp and hair because of repeated perm and dyeing procedures. Thus, the needs for hair care began to arise. The industry has faced problems such as low birthrate, aging population, high labor cost and rapid rise of minimum wage since 2015 and the Head Spa Service menu emerged as a solution. The purpose of this research is to identify the current status of Head Spa services in Korea, to compare current status of Head Spa and Head Spa education program in Korea and Japan, and to present basic data to establish Head Spa service in Korea and to show the direction of Korean style Head Spa services in the future. The followings are the result of the study. First, based on a comparative analysis of the head spa programs between Korea and Japan, Korea uses single or limited head spa treatment products, treatment devices, and treatment programs, whereas Japan has introduced and used more diverse and global treatment products and treatment programs. Second, when comparing the current status of Head Spa in Korea and Japan based on the Kerastase brand which is being used in Korea and Japan in common, about 90 beauty salons in Korea have Kerastase Head Spa program nationwide, while 2,918 shops in Japan perform Kerastase Head Spa program. In Japan, shops providing Kerastase Head Spa program are classified by class and managed accordingly. There was also difference in Head Spa program between two countries. In the Head Spa program, it focused on product composition and procedures for the management of scalp and hairs in Korea, while Japanese shops differentiated service fees by applying the concept of time strictly to the scalp and hair care courses. Third, in order to activate the head spa in Korea, it is necessary to develop a variety of Head Spa treatment programs, to expand the Head Spa treatment environment, and cultivate personnel with Head Spa capabilities. In Japan, they have a unified hairdresser qualification system. They perform Head Spa training separately for beauty salon and barbershop workers. Head Spa License over Grade II is allowed to the hairdressers with qualification. It is thought that all of these activated the Head Spa market in Japan. According to the results of the study, it was found that most of the survey figures were high both in Korea and Japan including Head Spa brands, Head Spa programs, and Head Spa specialized shops. Head Spa qualification system was unified and well established. Therefore, it is found that we need to explore Head Spa brands more aggressively and to establish a unified Head Spa training program. This study has limitations in that it used pre-collected data only and compared the current status of Head Spa in Korea with that in Japan only. It is hoped that the follow-up studies will include more countries for comparison and expand the study to include customer satisfaction to help the development of Korean Style Head Spa.
