The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of rejection sensitivity on the relationship between the approval motivation and social anxiety. This study was carried out on a total of 464 students, 252 male students, and 212 female students attending universities in Gwangju and Chonnam provinces. Measuring instruments were the social avoidance and distress scale (Jeong-yoon Lee, Jeong-hoon Choi, 1994), approval motivation scale (Jungsook Lee, 2002), and rejection sensitivity questionnaire (Bokdong Lee, 2000). We compared the approval motivation, rejection sensitivity, and social anxiety according to the demographic characteristics of participants; we also analyzed the relationship between research variables, and verified the mediating effect through hierarchical regression analysis of Baron and Kenny (1986). The results of this study are as follows. First, female students have higher level of social anxiety than male students, and people who have a lower level of income have more social anxiety. Second, the correlation between approval motivation, rejection sensitivity, and social anxiety is statistically significant. The higher the approval motivation, the higher the rejection sensitivity and the social anxiety level are. The lower the rejection sensitivity is, the lower the social anxiety level is. Third, there was a partial mediation effect of rejection sensitivity in the relationship between approval motivation and social anxiety. It means that desire for recognition directly affects social anxiety and indirectly influences social anxiety through rejection sensitivity. The significance of this study is as follows. First, it is significant that the rejection sensitivity has a mediating effect in the relationship between recognition desire and social anxiety. Second, in order to alleviate the social anxiety of college students, it is necessary not only to have a proper level of approval motivation, but also to mitigate rejection sensitivity. The limitations of this study are as follows. First, there is a generalization difficulty in that the research samples of this study are only university students in a specific area. In the follow-up study, university students in other regions will be needed as research samples for generalizing the results. Second, the results of this study cannot be generalized as social anxiety disorder group. Subsequent studies will need to study clinical specimens diagnosed with social anxiety disorder.
