We study unbalanced regional growth in South Korea. The difference in income growth can also be deepened across regions sharing similar cultures and institutions. This analysis of unbalanced regional economic growth allows us to provide a new view of understanding economic growth. Previous studies have argued that the agglomeration effect of population and human capital induce the difference in income growth between regions. While adopting this discussion, we also emphasize whether asymmetrical mobility of factors and directed technical changes could influence regional economic growth. This dissertation consists of two essays associated with the difference in the growth of regions in South Korea. In the first essays, we examine the effect of primacy on income convergence in South Korea by using regional panel data from the 2000–2014 period. We employ a heterogeneity convergence model with various versions of primacy to estimate the speed of income convergence in South Korea. We then analyze differences in the speed of convergence between the Seoul metropolitan area (SMA) and the others (NSMA). We first illustrate that SMA’s speed of convergence is more rapid than that of the NSMA. We next provide evidence that primacy is more relevant to income growth in the NSMA. Finally, the speed of income convergence in the NSMA gradually reduces with increased primacy. From convergence rate estimations, we find that inequality of income growth across regions is deepened when primacy is reinforced. In the second essays, we provide evidence on the relationship between directed technical change and unbalanced regional growth in local labor markets. Directed technical change (DTC) is the hypothesis that countries with abundant human capital enjoy the benefits of new technologies or productivity growth in the context of endogenous growth theory. This hypothesis mainly has employed to interpret the difference in income growth across countries or to explain wage premium for educated workers in the labor markets. Metropolitan areas have comparative advantages in earning a high wage and in getting opportunities for jobs in high-tech and technology-intensive sectors. Due to these characteristics, the labor market in SMA can be more sensitive to response on directed technical change advances, which implies that they can enjoy more benefits. This situation, consequently, would lead to a difference in income growth between regions. In this essay, we derive the relative labor demand function from the theory of directed technical change and empirically estimate this model. Because wages and employment are endogenously determined, we examine our model to employ instrumental variables methods such as TSLS, GMM, CU-GMM. As a result of the estimation, we show that the density of bigger firms is significant. This finding means that the employment of professional jobs in SMA where bigger firms are relatively concentrated may increase. More importantly, the elasticity of the relative wage in SMA is more sensitive than that in NSMA. Compared with NSMA, the local market in SMA has an advantage in creating professional jobs or paying to high-wage. This environment can deepen the difference in the wage for high skilled between regions, and, in turn, induce unbalanced regional growth.
