The purpose of this study is to find out how the scientific problem solving activities in life affect the scientific attitude and problem solving abilities of infants, and how they affect each sub-area.
Specific study questions to achieve this purpose were as follows. 1. How are the effects of the scientific problem solving activities in life on the scientific attitude of young children's? 1-1. How are the effects of the scientific problem solving activities in life on curiosity, a sub-area of scientific attitudes? 1-2. How are the effects of the scientific problem solving activities in life on willingness and initiative, a sub-area of scientific attitudes? 1-3. How are the effects of the scientific problem solving activities in life on honesty, a sub-area of scientific attitudes? 1-4. How are the effects of the scientific problem solving activities in life on objectivity, a sub-area of scientific attitudes? 1-5. How are the effects of the scientific problem solving activities in life on open mindedness, a sub-area of scientific attitudes? 1-6. How are the effects of solving scientific problems in life on critical thinking, a sub-area of scientific attitudes? 1-7. How are the effects of the scientific problem solving activities in life on suspended judgment, a sub-area of scientific attitudes? 1-8. How are the effects of the scientific problem solving activities in life on cooperation, a sub-area of scientific attitudes? 1-9. How are the effects of the scientific problem solving activities in life on persistency, a sub-area of scientific attitudes?
2. How are the effects of the scientific problem solving activities in life on the problem solving ability of young children? 2-1. How does the children’s science problem solving activities in life affect the discovery and statement for problem solving? 2-2. How does the children’s science problem solving activities in life affect suggesting and applying ideas for problem solving? 2-3. How does the children’s science problem solving activities in life affect reaching conclusions for problem solving? The subjects of this study were 28 5-year-old children in two public kindergartens located in Jung-gu, Deajeon Metropolitan City. The experimental group consisted of 14 children from M kindergarten in an elementary school and the control group included 14 children from B kindergarten in an elementary school. The experimental group young children experienced activities to solve scientific problems in their daily lives, and the experiment was conducted for 10 weeks from April 16, 2018 to June 22, 2018.
In order to investigate children’s scientific attitude, this research used a research tool that is revised and supplemented according to the purpose of this study. A scientific attitude test by Lee Kyung-min (2000), who modified and supplemented Yoo Kyung-sook's (1999) scientific attitude assessment criteria, was used as a research tool to identify the scientific attitudes of infants, and the activity tools were used in Kim Se-ha (2013). To measure the children’s problem solving ability, this research used a research tool that is revised and supplemented by Jang Kyeong-hye (1994) based on the version by An Kyeong-suk An(1992) from a questionnaire on problem solving by Tegano, Sawyer, and Moran(1989).
To verify the research problems, data processing was calculated the mean and standard deviations of pre-test and post-test results were calculated. T-test was carried out as for the increment, by deducted the pre-test from post-test results.
The results obtained from this study were as follows.
First of all, the scientific problem-solving activity in life had a positive effect on the scientific attitude of young children. By sub-area, it had a positive impact on curiosity, willingness and initiative, honesty, objectivity, open mindedness, critical thinking, suspended judgment and persistency, but it did not affect the improvement of cooperation. Second, the scientific problem-solving activity in life had a positive effect on infants' ability to solve problems. Looking at the sub-domain terms, it has had a positive impact on the discovery and statement of problems, suggesting and applying ideas for solving problems, and reaching conclusions on problem resolution.
