The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effects of ego defense mechanism on the effects of overprotective parenting attitude perceived by adolescents on peer bullying wrongdoing, harm, wrongdoing assistant behavior, harm defense, and participant role of bystander. In addition, because gender differences in grades were found in perceived overprotective parenting attitude, ego defense mechanism, and peer-bullying participants’ roles in the precedent research, the differences between male and female and grade were compared in this study. In particular, based on the result of the precedent research that says the peer bullying phenomenon starts from the fifth grade of elementary school and increases rapidly until the beginning of middle school, this research subjects were selected from the fifth grade of elementary school to the third grade of middle school. And, the results of this study were as follows; 463 elementary school students and middle school students in Incheon were surveyed using mock overprotective scale, ego defense mechanism scale, and peer bullying participant role scale. First, there were differences between male and female in perceived overprotection and behavioral role of peer bullying participant. The excessive expectation and over-control subscales of overprotection showed that the average of male students was higher than that of female students. In the peer bullying participant role scale, the average of male students was higher than that of female students in the wrongdoer, victim, onlooker, and wrongdoing assistant except for the defender. As for grade-specific differences, there were differences in perceived overprotection, ego defense mechanism, and peer bullying participant role behavior. In the overprotection, the fifth grade of elementary school was higher than the second and third grade of middle school, and in the ego defense mechanism, the fifth grade of elementary school was higher than the second grade of middle school. Lastly, in the role of peer bullying participant, the fifth grade of elementary school was higher than the sixth grade of elementary school and the first, second, and third grade of middle school. Second, the correlation and relative influence between parents’ overprotective parenting attitude, ego defense mechanism, peer bullying role behavior were analyzed as follows. Among the subfactors of perceived overprotection, excessive expectation was statically correlated with all subfactors except harm defense behavior and behavioral factors of wrongdoing assistance. And overcontrol showed a static correlation with all subfactors except defense mechanism and onlooker and excessive affection was statically correlated with all subfactors, excluding wrongdoing behavior and victimizing behavior. Autonomy control, overprotection, and anxiety were statically correlated with all subfactors. As for the relative influence of each variable, excessive expectation was shown as a factor for predicting wrongdoing behavior and overprotection, and anxiety were the factors predicting the victimizing behavior among subfactors of perceived overprotection. In addition, the variables that predict the bullying assistant behavior were overprotection, anxiety and autonomy control and autonomy control was the factor predicting onlooking behavior. There was no significant predictor to explain the harm defensive behavior. Among the subfactors of the ego defense mechanism, immature defense mechanism was relevant as a factor for predicting the wrongdoing behavior, the victimizing behavior, the bullying assistant behavior, and the onlooking behavior. Self-restraint defense mechanism and adaptive defense mechanism were predictors of harm defense. Among the subfactors of perceived overprotection, excessive expectation, overprotection, and anxiety were the factors predicting immature defenses mechanism, self-restraint defense mechanism, and avoidance defense mechanism. As a predictor of the adaptive defense system, excessive affection was shown. Third, as a result of verifying the mediating effect of the ego defense mechanism on the path of perceived overprotective parenting attitude towards peer bullying behavior, the perceived overprotective parenting attitude influenced the role of wrongdoing, harm, and the role of bullying assistant behavior among peer bullying participants through maladaptive defense mechanism.
