The use of smartphones at various positions can cause discomfort in the upper extremity musculoskeletal system. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to compare the effects of the prone, side-lying, and sitting positions during smartphone use. Thirty healthy young adults(18 women and 12 men) were recruited in the study. Subjects were instructed to type on the smartphone for 5 minutes in prone, side-lying, and sitting positions with 5 min of rest in between positions. During typing tasks, EMG data were acquired from the upper extremity muscles and analyzed using the Amplitude Probability Distribution Function (APDF) method. Additionally, the wrist and elbow joint angles were assessed with the motion analysis system (MyoMotion). In 10% APDF, the APB muscle showed relatively continuous muscle activation. In 50% APDF, the FCU muscle displayed higher muscle activity in the side-lying position, whereas the APB and ECU muscles showed higher muscle activity in the sitting position. In 90% APDF, the UT, ECU, and APB muscles showed higher muscle activity in the sitting position. Additionally, the wrist extension in the side-lying position was relatively neutral than that in prone and sitting positions (p<0.05). In conclusion, the use of a smartphone in a side-lying position than in a prone or sitting position is recommended because it reduces overuse of the upper-extremity muscles and poor alignment of the wrists, which that can cause musculoskeletal disorders.
