고속도로 인터체인지 진출부 안전성 향상을 위한 적정 감속차로 길이 산정에 관한 연구 A study on the determination of appropriate deceleration lane length for the improvement of safety of interchange exit ramps원문보기

Currently, accidents caused by over speeding in the curved section of the interchange’s exit-ramp terminals are the most frequent ones on highways. The reason for the over speeding of the curved section is that the drivers are unable to sufficiently reduce speed in the deceleration lane where the deceleration should occur. Because the domestic design standards assume that the speed of curve is kept constant by the speed at the end point of deceleration lane, which leads to high speed in the curve ramp. Therefore, in this study, the actual driving behavior of the deceleration lane was analyzed and the determination of the appropriate deceleration lane length was carried out in order to improve safety of interchange off-ramps. The current design standard for deceleration lane in Korea is calculated using the attainable speed at the deceleration lane and the average operating speed at the exit-ramp terminal, which is generally similar to or slightly longer than the length adopted by other countries. However, in order to count for any design bias, the design standard suggests a value 20 to 30m longer than the calculated value. In addition, when analyzing the actual driving behavior on the exit-ramp terminal, it was shown that drivers enter the deceleration lane, accelerate on some sections and then decelerate gradually. It is judged that the drivers feel that the length of the deceleration lane is too long, encouraging acceleration for a certain period of time, and then deceleration as the driver approaches the nose part. It is deemed that the acceleration takes place on the deceleration lane where the deceleration is to be made, and the deceleration takes place over a shorter distance at a higher speed, leading to over speeding on the curve ramp. Therefore, this study aims at selecting appropriate deceleration lane length since the length of the deceleration lane is designed longer than necessary, which is considered to be a threat to the safety of the interchange. At this time, safe speed values were determined based on the actual driving behavior, and the length that corresponds to this speed was deemed the appropriate deceleration lane length. The appropriate deceleration length was shown to be 110m on the loop ramp and 95m on the reverse curve ramp as well as the direct ramp based on a design speed of 100km/h on the main road. Even though the length of the deceleration lane shown in this study needs verification, it was found that the length recommended by the current design standard in use for deceleration lanes cause over speeding in curve ramps and deceleration lanes. Therefore, the length proposed for deceleration lane in accordance to the actual driving behavior is the appropriate length that can prevent over speeding in both the curve ramp and deceleration lane.
