This study aims at suggesting new design standards that reflect the driver's speed characteristics and running speed for the proper section and the proper length of parallel deceleration lane of the trumpet interchange exit ramp which constitute most of the freeway interchanges in Korea. Review of the existing guideline on structural and facility standards of roads, which is Korea's Roadway Geometric Design Standard shows that the design standards for the length of deceleration lane was adopted from a Policy on Geometric Design of Roads and Streets (Greenbook) while the deceleration lane section is based on Japanese Road Manual, meaning it has limitations that do not correspond to Korea's reality. More particularly, since the length of the deceleration lane is applied much higher than the calculated value, on-site surveys show that acceleration occurs at some points within the deceleration lane. Therefore, in this study, the deceleration lane section was reset by investigating the drivers' speed characteristics, the running speed, and the deceleration rate of each point. These input variables in determining the length of the deceleration lane were analyzed based on on-site survey, and the values were reflected. Furthermore, the deceleration lane length was divided into the length of each section before and after the nose point, and the type of exit ramp was presented. Twelve Trumpet interchanges were selected by region for on-site survey, and mobile detectors were installed at regular intervals to collect the data. Data collection indicated a driving speed of approximately 13-20 km/h above the speed limit on most exit ramps. This shows that the hazard of traffic accidents due to over-speeding in the exit ramp are latent, and at the same time, the drivers' speed characteristics is not reflected even though facilities that meet the design standards are provided. The running speed of each point which is an input variable for calculating the length of the deceleration lane was applied and reaffirmed with 85-percentile speed defined as the maximum safe speed for travelling in previous studies and 85-percentile deceleration of the deceleration section. The safety-based speed means the maximum speed at which a driver can comfortably drive under a given road condition, without anxiety caused by high-speed driving or frustration caused by low-speed driving. Also, the arithmetic average of 85th-percentile deceleration rate analyzed by type of exit ramp are defined as the safety speed at which a pleasant and safe deceleration driving can be driven, taking into account the normal deceleration rate provided by the international literature such as g-g diagrams. In this study, the criteria for deceleration lanes, which were categorized by design speed, were calculated by segmenting them into types of connections (loop type, semi-direct type, direct type), and the length of the deceleration lane with safety speed by point safety speed and safety deceleration rate within the deceleration lane was presented separately. In addition, the deceleration lane section spans from the end of the taper to the end of the spiral. The length of the section of the deceleration lane before the nose point was specified to facilitate the application of the design. As a result, the length of the deceleration lane prior to the nose point is reduced and the length of the spiral in the nose section is increased. To verify the effects, exit ramp of each type with new design criteria were verified using a driving-simulator. The results from the simulation show that only consistent deceleration can take place in the deceleration lane in terms of driving behaviour being observed, and in terms of speed as simulation participants maintained relatively low driving speed. This ensures that safe driving can be carried out if applied to the site in practice. The task of follow-up studies on more cases of the design criteria suggested in this study for deceleration lanes is needed for broad application to not only trumpet interchanges but also to various types of interchanges and junctions. Nevertheless, the use of the design criteria suggested in this study for parallel deceleration lanes with exit ramp based on the drivers' speed characteristics and the running speed of the driver will contribute greatly to enhancing the safety of the trumpet interchanges.
