The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of collage art activities on the improvement of communication skills of autistic children. The subjects of the study were three autistic children diagnosed as mild autism, with an intellectual disability severity of 42-44 and their level of receptive and expressive vocabulary test was above the age of three. The selection and intervention took place from December 1, 2018 to February 28, 2019, for about three months. Collage art activity intervention was customized for each subject through review of previous research. A total of twelve interventions were held twice a week. To evaluate the frequency of functional communication skill and diversity of communication function, recess time was provided twice at baseline and six times at intervention stage. After fifteen days of rest period, we performed two maintenance evaluations. We utilized the communication function analysis table to scrutinize the recordings and analyzed frequency, type and subtype of occurrence of communication function. Intervention was fifty minutes per session, and there were activities and demonstration of the session for fifteen minutes before the start of the full-scale collage art activity. Collage art activities were held for twenty minutes. When the work was completed, it provided an opportunity to communicate naturally with the subjects about the story. The results of the collage art activities are summarized as follows. First, collage art activities improved the frequency of the overall communication function of autistic children. At the baseline stage, the mean was 2.6, but increased to 20.5 at the intervention stage and 28.7 at the maintenance stage. This result can be interpreted as a repetitive structure of collage art activities. Collage art activities have shown that students can learn the functions necessary for communicating with children with autistic disorder by naturally repeating similar activities using various materials at each session. Secondly, collage art activities were found to be effective not only in increasing the frequency of communicative function of autistic children but also in increasing diversity. In the baseline stage, the subjects of the study were only able to demand and respond. However, through the intervention and maintenance phase of the collage activity, the subjects became capable of expressing their responses on average of 7.5 different ways. While there were no new types of communication functions appeared in the baseline stage, the intervention and the maintenance phase revealed new communication functions such as questioning, responding by yes or no, answering questions, calling, admiring, stating names and describing objects of its unique characteristics.
The result and the conclusion of this study indicated that collage art activities were effective in improving communication skills of autistic children. However, there were differences in the effect of the collage art activities on each subject depending on the degree of intellectual disability in individual characteristics of children with autistic disorder.
