The Relation between Inattention and Aggression Among ADHD Children and Adolescents : The Moderating Effect of Working Memory원문보기

The association between aggression and hyperactivity/impulsivity in children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is well known, but there is little research on the relationship between aggression and inattention as well as the moderating role of working memory. Thus the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between aggression and inattention and the moderating effects of working memory in this relationship in children and adolescents with ADHD. Thirty-one children and Twenty-six adolescents with ADHD were retrospectively investigated. The participants completed the Korean-Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (K-WISC-IV), the Korean Child Behavior Checklist (K-CBCL) and Children Depression Inventory (CDI). The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney test, partial correlation analysis and moderating analysis using the PROCESS macro for SPSS win 23.0. Working memory had no significant correlation with aggression in children and adolescents with ADHD, but inattention had a significant positive correlation. In addition, in the positive correlation between aggression and inattention, working memory was significantly moderating effect of aggression by interacting with inattention. The moderating effect of working memory on aggression was found to be more than 73.5 points in the Working Memory Index of the K-WISC-IV. The results of this study demonstrate that, in children and adolescents with ADHD, aggression is associated with increased inattention and that working memory plays a positive moderating effect in this relationship. Therefore, in children and adolescents with ADHD who display aggression, it is necessary to take an interest in the effect of inattention and proceed with the appropriate treatment. In the future, it is necessary to identify the related factors that lead to aggression and the patterns of aggression in children and adolescents with ADHD according to the sub-symptoms of ADHD.
