It is a critical role for teachers to help students to exert autonomy both inside and outside the classroom. In the case of language learning, the use of technological tools and resources is heavily involved outside the classroom. Using technology, especially YouTube, for learning English outside the classroom has a great influence on learner autonomy and lifelong learning skills. Thus, it is a major responsibility for English teachers to develop the learner autonomy and attitude needed for learning with YouTube beyond the classroom. However, previous studies have mainly focused on the perception of learner autonomy inside and outside the classroom, and only a few domestic researches have focused on learner and teacher perception of teacher roles. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the teacher roles necessary for autonomous English learning with YouTube outside the classroom.
The data was collected from a questionnaire given to English learners (n=256) at two middle schools in Seoul, Korea. Teacher participants (n=23) were randomly collected through both online and offline methods. An interview was also conducted with 2 teachers. The major findings of the study are as follows. First, Korean middle school students use YouTube for English learning much less compared to the time spent on YouTube in general. Second, students expected greater involvement from teachers in supporting autonomous learning with YouTube. Third, the study found that Korean middle school students and teachers expected significant teacher roles for developing learner autonomy in using YouTube for English learning. Lastly, there was an inconsistent finding between learner and teacher perceptions of teacher roles. Learners expected teachers to share listening strategies necessary for leaning with YouTube, while teachers didn’t.
The research findings indicate the importance of teachers active involvement, which includes affection, capacity, and behavioral support, in promoting autonomous English learning with YouTube outside the classroom. The study also calls for teachers’ greater awareness of the usefulness and possibility of YouTube and of the various roles their students expect them to play. Lastly, the study suggests that it is necessary to have a trusted YouTube channel or videos to share, which is helpful for learners’ autonomous English learning beyond the classroom.
