The fault of the power system must be removed quickly and accurately to operate the power system stably and reliably. The protection relay used to detect the fault of the power system receives the voltage and current signals of the protection area as inputs and estimates the phasor of fundamental frequency components for the voltage and current signals. Then, the defects of the protection area are detected using the phasor of the estimated fundamental frequency component. Therefore, to implement a reliable protection relay, it is necessary to estimate the phasor of the fundamental frequency component for voltage and current signals accurately. However, when a fault occurs in the power system, voltage and current signals included noise components, such as a high-frequency component and an exponentially decaying DC offset component, in addition to the fundamental frequency component, and these components cause an error in the phasor estimation result. Generally, the high-frequency component caused by the power system fault is due to the raveling wave, which can be removed using a low-pass filter. However, the exponentially decaying DC offset component is not removed using a low-pass filter, which is a major cause of error in the phasor estimation result of the fundamental frequency component. Therefore, to implement a reliable protection relay, it is necessary to eliminate the influence of the exponentially decaying DC offset component included in the fault signal. The power systems must improve system stability and reliability through quick and accurate fault clearance. This paper proposes a fast phasor estimation technique based on the least squares method robust to the exponentially decaying DC offset component included in the fault signal. The least squares method is representative method for obtaining the parameters of the model and estimates the parameters of the most suitable model considering the relationship between the model and the input signal. Therefor, if an appropriate model is designed considering all the components included in the input signal, the parameters of the accurate model can be estimated. However, if a component that is not considered in the previously designed model is included in the input signal, the parameters of the model estimated using the least squares method include the influence of the component not considered in the model. The proposed algorithm is designed using the features of the least squares method. In this paper, to obtain the information of the DC offset component included in the input signal, first the model of the least squares method considering the harmonic components and the constant component is designed, and the parameter of the model is estimated using this. In this case, the parameter of the estimated model includes the influence of the exponentially decaying DC offset component, and the information of the exponentially decaying DC offset component can be easily obtained using the parameter of the constant component in these parameters. Therefore, the exponentially term of the exponentially decaying DC offset component can be estimated. The model of the new least squares method is designed considering the harmonic components and the exponential term of the exponentially decaying DC offset component. Thus, it is possible to estimate the parameter of the model that does not include the influence from the exponentially decaying DC offset component. The proposed method has the advantage of estimating the accurate model parameters without the influence of the DC offset component included in the signal. However, there is a disadvantage that the computational burden is increased because the model of the least squares method needs to be redesigned. Therefore, to reduce the computational burden, I propose a technique to reduce the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm by using the half-cycle integral signal. The proposed algorithm reduces the data window required to estimate the parameters of the model by half by eliminating the even harmonics contained in the signal through the half-cycle integration and designing the least squares method for the signal. Thus, the computational burden of the proposed algorithm can be reduced by half. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified by computer-generated signals, EMTP-simulated signals, and analog-to-digital (A/D) signals. Additionally, the performance for the case of application to the distance relay was examined. A series of performance evaluations show that the proposed modified phasor estimation algorithm can quickly and effectively suppress the adverse influence of DC offsets in a relaying signal. Furthermore, adopting the proposed algorithm in a distance relay is was not affected by system and fault conditions and the output was stable without an oscillatory response. The performances of the A/D signals and the distance relay were checked to confirm the applicability of the actual relay. As a result, it is believed that the proposed algorithm can contribute to the realization of high-reliability, high-speed digital protection relay.
