Recently, thermal power plants produces electricity using coal to meet the substantial amount of energy demand in Korea, generating more than 8 million tons of coal ash wastes every year. 20% of coal ash waste treated by landfill, and 80% recycled as a raw material for cement, concrete mixture or embankment for construction. However, the recycled materials are not preferred, due to its inconsistent quality with regard to physical and chemical composition and potential hazardous risk of contaminants contained in the coal ash. Recent studies have reported that coal ash contains a notable amount of rare-earth elements (REEs), which are used as critical raw materials in a wide variety of industries. And it has also been reported that a valuable inorganic catalyst, zeolite can be synthesized from coal ash using silicon oxides and aluminum oxides rich in coal ash. In this study, a type of coal ash was collected from a thermal power plant located in southern bound of Korea, the total amounts of REEs contained in the coal ash were examined. In addition, the characteristics of their associations within coal ash were analyzed by sequential extraction methods. Total contents of REEs in coal ash were found to be 185.80mg/kg in the bottom ash, and 179.19mg/kg in the fly ash. The light REEs (LREEs) of which atomic numbers are smaller were found in larger amounts in both types of coal ash. The compositions of REEs present in the coal ash were very similar to those for other coals, coal ash, and earth crust materials in the world. From the sequential extractions, it was found that REEs are strongly bound within the mineral parts of coal ash except for several elements such as lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce) and neodymium (Nd). Therefore, it was confirmed that strong acids such as HF and HNO3 must be used for REE separation from coal ash. As a strategy for extracting REEs from zeolite synthesis from fly ash, the following two step procedures are recommended: (i) extraction from distilled water used in the procedure for the separation of magnetic fly ash (MFA) from non-magnetic fly ash, and (ii) separation of REEs after the collection of separated MFA. The results of this study are expected to provide fundamental information for the development of new strategy and methods to use coal ash waste as resource materials.
