The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual situation of the disorder diagnosis’s referral process for at-risk children and awareness of the early childhood teachers. In order to achieve this, the issues of the research problems are as follows. First, we investigated the actual situation of process of requesting disorder diagnosis for at-risk children. Second, the purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of early childhood teachers on the process of requesting the diagnosis of at-risk children. To investigate this, a questionnaire survey was conducted on the 163 early childhood teachers in Busan Metropolitan City and Gyeongsangnam-do province. The collected data were analyzed frequency analysis using SPSS Statistics Ver.20. The main results of this study are as follows. First, according to the actual situation of disorder diagnosis process for at-risk children, the majority of the early childhood teachers had experienced in teaching infants with an average of 1 or 2 at-risk, but they didn’t know or use screening tools. Most respondents answered that they don‘t know or don’t have a support system to consult, and they had little experience with referral to professional agency. In addition, the early childhood teachers responded When they informed the parent of child’s problems or asked for cooperation, the parents expressed negative responses such as not acknowledging the child’s problems even if they admitted that. Second, according to the awareness of the teachers about the disorder diagnosis process for the at-risk children, the most common answer was that the teachers lacked the accurate knowledge about the disorder. The lack of professional knowledge of the teachers was caused of the risk of under-diagnosis or over-diagnosis for at-risk children. Because of conflicts with the parents, The most common opinion is that it is difficult to ask the director and manager for cooperation. In order to overcome these difficulties, the early childhood teachers need to provide information on the cause of problem behavior of the at-risk children, characteristics of disorder area, and educational support. Parents need to improve their perception of disorders screening and the receptive attitude, and that it is most desirable to hire special education teachers in terms of preschool educational institution. The results of this study suggest that there is a possibility that the early childhood teachers play an important role as the first reporter in the early diagnosis process that can distinguish children with disorders when compared with the development of their children. In addition, the results of this study showed that the early childhood teacher’s difficulties in the disorder diagnosis process for the at-risk children should be identified in order to solve this problem and it will be necessary to develop the system to improve the awareness of the at-risk children, to develop and to supply manuals for the disorder diagnosis process, to get an accurate knowledge of disorders from the preliminary teachers.
