The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for developing toddlers' emotional intelligence, by examining effects of teachers' empathy and ego-resilience. In addition, it also intends to suggest the need of teacher education for enhancing teachers' empathy and ego-resilience, which are expected to influence toddlers' emotional intelligence and the ground on which the teacher education is implemented. For the purpose of this study, following questions are raised: 1. Are there differences in teachers' empathy and ego-resilience according to their general backgrounds (age, career, educational level, wages, institution, presence of children and marital status)? 2. Are there differences in toddlers' emotional intelligence according to their age and gender? 3. What is the relationship among infants' age, gender and teachers' empathy, ego-resilience, and the former's emotional intelligence? 4. What do effects infants' age and gender and teachers' empathy and ego-resilience have on the former's emotional intelligence? The subjects include a total of 64 teachers working with 2-5 year olds in child care centers and kindergartens (16 teachers by each age of toddlers) and a total of 448 toddlers (7 toddlers by each class and 112 toddlers by each age). In order to measure toddlers' emotional intelligence, the rating scale of infants' emotional intelligence for teachers was used, which was created by Kim Gyeonghui (1999) based on the model suggested by Salovey & Mayer (1996). To measure teachers empathy, an empathy test was used, which Jeon Byeongseong (2003) created by reorganizing the adoptions of Mehrabian and Epstein (1972)'s and Bryant (1982)'s emotional empathy scales and Davis (1980)'s IRI test, which were published by Park Seonghui (1994). To measure teachers' ego-resilience, the scale of ego-resilience was used, which was derived from Ego-Resiliency Scale (ERS) developed by Klohnen(1996), adapted by Park Hyeonjin(1996) and used by La Onmi(2018). As analysis methods, frequency analysis, estimation of Cronbach's αá, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, scheffe's post-test, estimation of Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficients and multiple regression were conducted. The findings are as follows: First, there was a significant difference in teachers' emotionalempathy, depending on age, career, educational level, wages and types of institutions, while there was a significant difference in their ego-resilience, depending on age, care, educational level, wages, types of institutions, marital status and the presence of children. Second, there were significant differences in the whole emotional intelligence and its sub-factors, depending on toddlers' gender, while there were significant differences in recognition on and care for others' emotions, emotional control and suppression of impulse, and the relationship with teachers, depending on age. Third, toddlers' gender had positive correlations with use of one's emotions, recognition on and care for others' emotions, recognition on and expression of one's emotions, emotional control and suppression of impulse, relationship with teachers and peers, the whole emotional intelligence; their age with use of one's emotions, recognition on and care for others' emotions and the relationship with peers, among the sub-factors of emotional intelligence; teachers' the whole empathy with confidence, interpersonal efficiency, optimistic attitudes, anger control, among the sub-factors of self-resilience; teachers' empathy with use of one's emotions, recognition on and care for others' emotions, recognition on and expression of one's emotions, emotional control andsuppression of impulse and the relationship with teachers and peers, among the sub-factors of toddlers' emotional intelligence; and teachers' ego-resilience and toddlers' emotional intelligence with the whole ego-resilience and use of one's emotions, recognition on and care for others' emotions, recognition on and expression of one's emotions, emotional control and suppression of impulse and the relationship with teachers and peers, among the sub-factors of toddlers' emotional intelligence. Fourth, the variables influencing toddlers' the whole emotional intelligence included toddlers' gender, teachers' cognitive and emotion empathy and the whole empathy; and confidence and optimistic attitudes, among the sub-factors of ego-resilience; and the use of one's emotions, emotional control and suppression of impulse and the relationship with teachers and peers, among sub-factors toddlers' emotional intelligence. This study would be basic data for helping toddlers develop their positive emotional intelligence, and also suggests that it is necessary to implement the teacher education for enhancing teachers' empathy and ego-resilience, both of which influence toddlers' emotional intelligence.
