A Study on the Right-Brain Centered Drawing Program to Improve Observation Ability : Focused on 11th Grade Students at an Art Oriented High School원문보기

At present, art education tends to pursue to express it well in advance. At schools and academies, students are learning the techniques of drawing that are injected and they are learning mainly competitive-oriented practical skills required at university entrance examinations. This reduces the amount of time students spend observing and expressing something and also affects their own way of expressing their thoughts or feelings. This learning method, which focuses on the techniques of drawing objects, makes it difficult for students to observe and express actual objects. If not expressed as intended, students will not be satisfied with the outcome of the work, and their confidence in drawing will be reduced. So they lose interest in the expression of observation. This is due to the pursuit of rational and reasonable results even in art related to the right-brain type of eduction which is intuitive, with a logical and systematic focus on the left-brain centered educational environment. Therefore, this study suggests that it is necessary to use the lesser - used the right-brain to improve the observation ability in drawing instruction. The concept of drawing and its historical meaning were examined and its modern meaning was examined. And the significance of the right-brain centered drawing education through understanding of observation expressions was examined. After that, I developed a drawing program using Betty Edwards' the right-brain drawing principle (boundary, space, relation, contrast, form) and examined its educational value. The right-brain centered drawing program developed in this study consisted of 18 lessons for 6 weeks from March 11 to April 15, 2019. In addition, 20 students were selected as the second grade students at the ‘Y’ high school class in Paju, Gyeonggi-do. Based on the preliminary survey, I examined the students' understanding of drawing education. After that, I started the lesson to understand the concept of drawing, and I made up a line drawing, a hand drawing, a margin drawing, a space drawing, and a figure drawing. In addition, students were asked to write their own self-assessment paper at the end of each week's class. After that, post survey was conducted. The educational effects of the right-brain centered drawing program could be confirmed through drawing works, post survey, and self evaluation paper. The conclusion is as follows. First, the right-brain centered drawing program helped students improve their observation ability. When we observe the objects as they are, we can see that the intervention of existing knowledge is minimized and correct observation is possible in drawing pictures. Second, the drawing program using the right-brain influenced the perception of the learner's drawing. Through the drawing program, we can understand that the real world of drawing can be various and recently it is perceived as an independent media. Third, the whole-brain was able to balance through stimulating the right-brain. Until this time, art class focused on using the left-brain, mainly focused on results-oriented class, infusion class, and technology-oriented class. However, we experienced experiential activities, expressive activities, and appreciation activities through this program. As a result, students were able to utilize both intellect and emotion, rather than one-sided thinking. This study is a meaningful attempt in that the drawing program using the right hemisphere suggests the possibility of improving the observation ability to students who have difficulties in observation expression in the educational environment focused on the left-bain. In addition, it is meaningful that the right-brain, which is relatively less used in the left-brain oriented education environment, is used in a balanced use of the whole-brain. In the future, various art practice classes should be continuously tried to improve the observation ability of students by applying the learning method using the right brain.
