The first step to analyze and solve the PM10 problem is to understand and diagnose the phenomenon. It is important to understand spatio-temporal characteristics of PM10 data including both time and space. Spatio-temporal visualization techniques are effective in representing spatial and temporal changes of PM10, summarizing data, identifying trends and patterns. A general method for representing the space-time changes of PM10 is arranging spatial distribution map or using animation technique. This method has the disadvantage that the information in the data could be lost or misunderstood when the person has to explore the time step and compare the changes. PM10 is represented as a static theme map and needs to be represented as atmospheric diffusion pollutant with a flow. Visualization of PM10 with a flow can be expressed as space and time changes at the same time, which can overcome limitations of recognition and perception which are disadvantages of forementioned methods. Considering this point, In this study, Visualizing PM10 was visualized as flow. Conventional cases of visualization of PM10 with a flow use superimposing concentration distribution map and wind field. In general, the flow of PM10 is related to air pressure and wind while the local flow in the case of urban might not be proper to use wind field due to the difference between wind and the flow of PM10. Therefore, flow information is extracted and visualized directly from the PM10 data by the flow extraction method using the gravity model. This method has an advantage that additional information for estimating the intensity and direction of PM10 flow is not necessary. The patterns are analyzed with traffic information. For the purpose of differentiating from the previous studies, detailed analysis was carried out by classifying into road grades, and the data of traffic volume and vehicle velocity were used. The results of the correlation analysis between the PM10 flow patterns and traffic information showed concentration patterns in morning rush hour and dispersion patterns in evening rush hour. In morning rush hour, concentration patterns are identified in the center of roads, and flow patterns are more related to traffic velocity than traffic volume. The spatial location showing concentration patterns is similar to the general national road, and the occurrence of concentration patterns are highly correlated with the changes in traffic velocity of urban expressways.
