With the increase in the number of musculoskeletal disorder patients in the modern society, the importance of trunk stabilization is being emphasized. Trunk stabilization refers to the ability to appropriately control the trunk muscles in order to maintain stability at the times of dynamic posture maintenance or spontaneous postural changes. Bridging exercise, among various stabilization exercises, is a close-kinetic chain exercise with a wide basal plane and it does not require a large load. Moreover, it is an exercise capable of strengthening truck stabilization muscles and leg muscles simultaneously. However, erroneous exercise techniques become the cause of other disorders including inducing of back pain, etc. Therefore, this study aims to propose an appropriate width of leg spread by comparing the level of muscle activation in the trunk and legs in accordance with the width of the legs spread at the time of a bridging exercise. 21 male adults in their 20’s with no orthopedic abnormalities participated as the subjects of the research. The subjects were instructed to lie down on their backs in neutral posture and spread their arms at 30° angles while looking at the ceiling. Knees are bent by 90° and executed spreading of legs in 4 postures set at FOOT, ASIS, ACROMION and SKIN in accordance with the body type of each subject. Measurements are taken on a total of 7 muscle groups including the rectus abdominis muscle, external oblique abdominal muscle, internal oblique abdominal muscle, erector muscle of spine, gluteus maximus muscle, rectus femoris muscle, and biceps muscle of thigh. A surface electromyogram (Noraxon, USA) was used to measure the level of muscle activation. SPSS 18.0 (IBM) was used for data analysis, and repeated measure ANOVA and multiple comparison were executed to compare the levels of activation of muscles in the trunk and legs. The level of statistical significance (α) was set at 0.05. As the results of the research, although the rectus abdominis muscle, external oblique abdominal muscle, internal oblique abdominal muscle, and rectus femoris muscle displayed no statistical differences in the 4 types of bridging exercise postures, the erector muscle of the spine displayed statistically significant differences between FOOT, and FOOT, ASIS, and SKIN postures. Meanwhile, the gluteus maximus muscle displayed statistically significant differences between ASIS, and ACROMION, and SKIN, and biceps muscle of thigh displayed statistically significant differences between FOOT, and ASIS and ACROMION. The results of this research illustrated that the levels of activation of the gluteus maximus muscle and rectus femoris muscle, which are the main agonistic muscles, are high when the legs are spread evenly with the width of shoulder, with the reduction in the level of activation of compensating muscle groups. Therefore, it is most effective to set the width of the leg spread to that of the shoulder at the time of ordinary bridging exercises.
