The Effect of Performance Art Therapy on Self-Expression and Self-Efficacy of Children with Intellectual Disabilities원문보기

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of art therapy on the self-expression and self-efficacy of children with intellectual disabilities by performing art therapy on children with intellectual disabilities who have difficulties in interacting with others due to lack of self-expression and adapting in society because of low self-efficacy. The target of the study is a child with the third grade of intellectual disability attending to the Rehabilitation Center for the Disabled in B city. There were a total of 18 sessions from February 11, 2019 to April 19, 2019, including pre and post sessions. The length of each session was 50 minutes. The self-expression test tool used here is the Lee(2013)’s modified and adapted one in accordance of the intellectual level of mentally handicapped children, based on Byun and Kim(1980)’s self-expression scale, which restructured Rakos and Schroeder(1979)’s self-expression scale to make the scale fit to Korean cultural backgrounds. The self-efficacy test tool used here is the Woo(2012)’s modified and adapted one in accordance of the intellectual level of mentally handicapped children, based on Kim and Cha(1996)’s self-efficacy scale, which restructured Sherer(1982)’s self-expression scale. K-HTP picture test (dynamic house, tree, human figure test) developed by Burns (1987) is used here. By using a journal documented behavior, facial expression, language, and contents of consultation, a change between pre and post session is analyzed. The results of this study are as follows. First, performance art therapy positively influenced the self-expression of children with intellectual disabilities. Compared to the pre-test, the result of post-test showed an increase in self-expression, in terms of contents, verbal expression, and body language. Second, performance art therapy positively affected the self-efficacy of children with intellectual disabilities. There was an especially positive effect on confidence and self-regulation efficacy. Third, there was a positive change between the result of the pre and post test of the K-HTP picture test. In the figure in the pre-test, the child showed the emotion of isolation, depression, and dependence. However, in the figure in the post-test, the child recognized himself more positively and showed a change indicated the possibility of social contact. Therefore, in this study, it was found that performance art therapy has a positive effect on improving self-expression and self-efficacy for children with intellectual disabilities.
