This study was a qualitative case study aimed at carrying out art therapy programs for an adolescent childhood cancer survivor. The adolescent had been experiencing the after-effects following recovery from cancer and regaining normal life due to diseases during development. This study examined how art therapy ultimately affected the quality of life through the course of the therapy. The participant was an adolescent boy under the age of 13, who had been diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia in 2010 and had undergone surgery and follow-up treatment. The participant had been completely treated by 2017. Following treatment, the patient had experienced difficulties in adapting to routine life due to the after-effects. Thus, art therapy was conducted ten times between March and May of 2018. Art therapy programs considers the patients’ personal problems and helps patients adapt to daily life and these programs are flexibly adjusted in the course of addition or revision of therapy. The following conclusions can be drawn from this study. First, art therapy provided opportunities to re-perceive the past disease experiences that have been negative reminiscences to accomplishing experiences. This brought about positive changes that served as a motive for changing ideas of victims into people who overcame diseases, helping the participant becoming aware of internal power, and improving self-efficacy. Second, art therapy positively influenced the self-control capability of adolescent boy. The participant who revealed stress in responsible work and showed vulnerability in cognitive and emotional control capabilities gradually performed self-expression and demonstrated positive attitudes in adjusting behaviors and emotions by identifying motives to constantly conduct given works through self-understanding. This indicated the effectiveness of art therapy through both pre-test and post-test. Third, art therapy promoted self-expression more authentically by approaching the adolescent who had low emotional expression by applying non-verbal art work. In addition, it helped him experience self-understanding and contemplation through experiencing and exploring inner expression. In this way, art therapy provided opportunities of exploring oneself in an adolescent childhood cancer survivor who experienced difficulties in adapting to routine life due to the after-effects and improved self-efficacy and self-control capability by reinforcing successful experiences that overcame diseases and by perceiving and improving internal power. Accordingly, the constant development of art therapy programs is required to help psychosocial adjustment of adolescent childhood cancer survivors who experience difficulties in adapting into the course of returning to daily life after suffering from diseases.
