Recently, the environmental impacts caused by livestock burials are of concern. The biosecurity-related law prescribes mass depopulation as a primary means for countermeasures to the disease spreading, but the environmental consequences including groundwater contamination are known severe. When the environmental management of burials is not appropriate, the secondary contaminations occur. Various studies have been conducted to alleviate the problems of other burial sites. Among those attempts, Phyto-Barrier, which combines PRBs and Phytoremediation, was proposed for the remediation of groundwater in an agricultural area. In this study, the literature review was conducted to establish the design criteria for Phyto-Barrier, which design concept was proposed by the authors elsewhere. The adsorption capacity of ammonia nitrogen on biochar was estimated by batch adsorption test and column adsorption test. As a experimental result showed that the adsorption capacity U of rice husk biochar was estimated as 1.5 × 10-3 g / g. The minimum thickness of the adsorption barrier was estimated to be 0.57 m. When mixing zeolite, bentonite, etc. for adjusting the permeability coefficient, the minimum thickness may vary.
