This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of walking exercise on energy metabolism in relation to gender and 3 kinds of relative walking speed and 4 types of walking exercise. We experimented with 10 male and 10 female students majoring in physical education at K University once a week for 4 weeks. The exercise included normal walking exercise, walking with dumbbells, walking with sandbag bands on ankles, and power walking exercise. The walking speed (exercise intensity) of each individual was measured 40%, 50%, and 60% based on VT and the physical strength (3% inclination) and speed were determined which corresponds to VT. The measured values were analyzed by mixed design three-way ANOVA and the following results were obtained. First, there were significant differences in the amount of oxygen intake, respiration exchange rate, fat burning rate, fat mobilization rate, carbohydrate mobilization rate, and carbohydrate burning rate. Second, there was a significant difference in all measurement variables between walking speeds Third, there was a significant difference in carbohydrate mobilization rate and carbohydrate combustion in the interaction effect between gender and walking speed. Fourth, there was a significant difference only in oxygen intake between walking types. Fifth, the interaction effect between gender and walking type was shown only in oxygen intake. Sixth, the interaction effect between walking speed and walking type appeared only in oxygen intake. In conclusion, oxygen intake was higher in both men and women according to exercise intensity, and male’s oxygen intake was higher than female. In the exercise type, men showed higher oxygen intake in power walking, dumbbell walking and sandbag band walking than normal walking at all speeds, whereas women showed the same tendency as men only in slow walking. From this study we can suspect that the reason why there was no difference between the types of exercises is because the exercise load was relatively small for the subjects who had been doing physical fitness exercises and chose 1kg weight on both dumbbell and the sandbag band without considering their weight and the fitness level. In future study, the individual weight load should be selected and applied in consideration of the weight and fitness level of subjects.
