Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) ash in Korea contains considerable amounts of calcium, aluminium, iron, and silicon oxides. Although many studies have been conducted to utilize this as a building material, the recycling rate of MSWI ash in Korea is very low because of the chlorine compounds contained in MSWI ash. The main objective of this dissertation is to evaluate the feasibility of using calcium chloroaluminate (CCA) clinker fabricated from MSWI bottom ash as a substitute for cement clinker. The scope of the research includes the following: 1) characterization of the chemical and mineralogical properties of MSWI bottom ash, 2) analysis of temperature effects on formation of CCA and other cementitious compounds, and 3) examination of leachability of chlorides from thermally treated MSWI bottom ash in highly alkaline solution. The MSWI bottom ash used in this study contained 55.6 % of CaO, 18.1 % of Al2O3, 7.7 % of Si2O, 1.86 % of Fe2O3, and 2.79 % of Cl. The CCA phase was synthesized at 700 and 1,000 ℃. The MSWI bottom ash calcined at 1,000 ℃ was shown the highest formation of CCA phase and about 88.12 % of chlorine in MSWI ash were evaporated at 1,300℃. The leaching rates of chlorides were 39.07 % (109 ppm) in MSWI bottom ash, 55.33 % (161 ppm) in M300, 57.62 % (155 ppm) in M700, and 28.90 % (63.3 ppm) in M1000. The cement industry typically stipulates the chlorine ion concentration below 400 mg/kg in clinkers. In this study, the CCA clinker prepared by calcining at 1,000 ℃ fabricated a considerable amount of CCA and C2S crystals. The CCA clinker leached about 633 mg/kg of chlorine ion in pH 12 NaOH solution. Therefore, the CCA clinker manufactured at 1,000 ℃ using MSWI bottom ash might not adequate to be used as a cement substitute.
