The objectives of this study are to identify the origin and transformation process of infection control nursing in Korea by collecting historical data of infection control nursing through oral testimonies of infection control nurses, to explore the effects of infection control nursing on the development of infection control, and to develop Korean infection control nursing. This study was conducted by a historical research method using oral and historical data of research participants. The period of data collection was from May to October, 2019. The participants in the oral testimony collection was the nurses who had been performing infection control for more than 3 years in order to provide important information related to the history of infection control nursing. Nine participants were asked for their consents through telephone, e-mail or face-to-face contact. The interviewees were informed about the objectives of the study and the interviews were recorded under the consents given by the participants. Historical data were compiled from 1950's to the present by collecting articles, photographs, books, academic journals, laws, policies, guidelines, press releases, recommendations, and research data related to infection control, infection control nurses, and infectious diseases or epidemics. These oral and historical data were analyzed by a modified approach of the Miller-Rosser's reconstruction cross-analysis method based on Thompson and Rorty's theory and the result was described by period. In addition, efforts to enhance the reliability and validity of the historical facts of infection management nursing in Korea were made for this study. The results of the data collection were analyzed by classifying the whole period into the dawning period, the beginning period, the construction period, and the growth period according to the era of infection control nursing in Korea. The dawning period is till 1990, the beginning period is from 1991 to 1995, the construction period is from 1996 to 2015, and the growth period is from 2016 to the present. The themes of each era were identified as ‘emergence of the necessity for infection control’, ‘performance of infection control tasks by infection control nurses’, ‘establishment of infection control system as a specialty’ and ‘request to expand the role of infection control nurses.’ Infection control in Korea should be based on an understanding of the early stage when infectious diseases began to be controled. Interest in infection control began to grow in the 1960's and, in 1984, the mass outbreak of legionella’s diseases awoke the social need for infection control. Then the infection control work by infection control nurses began in 1991 when the hospital appointed the first dedicated infection control nurses in Korea. Early infection control nurses tried to establish their roles and identify infection control tasks. The infection control system was able to be systemized by carrying out the roles as a professional team after the establishment of Korean Association of Infection Control Nurses in 1996. Based on such reformation, laws and medical charge were set to establish the infection control system. In 1995, introduction of the evaluation system in medical institutions made it possible for the infection control system to be settled and strengthened. The epidemic of infectious diseases had the greatest influence on the change in the infection control policy, and the infection control nurses began to perform the infection control work according to the changed policy. As the result, the infection control nursing system was improved significantly. The infection control policy was further changed rapidly since the outbreak of MERS. Under such situation, the necessity for expanding the adoption of the infection control nursing system to small and medium hospitals, nursing homes, and even local communities was emerged. Therefore expansion of the laws related to the infection control and the medical charge, diversification of the education for the infection control, development of education system in new areas, and enhancement of the expertise of the infection control nurses are required to be implemented. At the present time when the infection control nursing becomes to emerge as an important practical nursing field, this study emphasizes the role and mission of infection control nurses by identifying the history of the infection control nursing, presents a clear vision of the work area of the infection control nursing, and provides a base for further expanding the professional area of the infection control nursing.
