A Psychoanalytic Study on Coaching
This paper concerns on the genesis of coaching and how it has developed, culminating in the psychoanalytic elements that has affected ‘coaching presence’, the contemporary conception in the field. Coaching first emerged in 1960’s as the sociocultural movement(human potential movement) that was to restore humanity and develop potentiality. After 1990’s, it has developed on into the ‘helping’ field for important individuals in companies, public organizations and sports, in main cities all over the world. Development of coaching in the areas of companies and sports has been focused on the individual’s well-performing and attainment of his aim, and the change of behavior and attitude for such to happen. Psychoanalysis, by means of the psychodynamic psychology, has greatly influenced on the emergence of coaching and its development, and given decisive impact on the establishment of ‘subject areas’, ‘coaching techniques’, and ‘one on one coaching’, as well. This renews the spirit of coaching that has been set from the scratch, which is restoration of humanity and development of potentiality. The author has suggested psychoanalytic coaching as the trend to come, along with psychoanalytic psychotherapy, which means to approach on the group of functioning people who are not psychopathological, and help them with the difficulties such as tasks or crises of life, and problems related to character. The structure of this paper is as below. In chapter Ⅱ, there will be a brief explanation on the progress of historic development in coaching, exploring possible parts stemmed from psychoanalysis, after which examinations will follow, on each concepts that has been set up on the foundation of psychodynamic coaching that is one of the branches of ‘evidence-based coaching’. These are the research as well as tracks that had been proceeded mostly in Europe(England, Denmark, France and so forth), but have deeply motivated the formation of contemporary coaching(subject and advance, the posture of coach). The coaching presence is explained using the well known phenomenon called ‘learning without being taught’ that characterizes the coaching, with which the author has elucidated the possibility that both coaching and psychoanalysis are able to co-work, coupling with ‘implicit relational knowing’, one of the accomplishments of Boston Process of Change Study Group. Discussion throughout chapter Ⅲ delineates several worthwhile topics such as the way leading to 3rd generation coaching(that is, the intersubjectivity in coaching relationships), the search for aesthete, the approach to Freud’s paper, ‘The constuctions in analysis(1937)’. The suggestion has been made that coaching is walking side by side with the theoretical development of psychoanalysis. The author, in addition, recommends to the whole psychoanalysis society that it assign a adjacent position to psychoanalytic coaching, as psychoanalysis has assigned to psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
