During the 30 years from 1888 to 1921, Busoni arranged many works of Bach for the piano. The key factor in his arrangement technique is to convey the composer's intention with faithfully keeping the melody and style of the original work.
This thesis studies Busoni's arrangement for the piano Chaconne in d minor(BWV 1004) of J. S. Bach's 'Chaconne' from Partita for solo violin No.2(BWV 1004). Chapter 2 covers Busoni's music and transcriptions. In chapter 3, it examines the musical background of Chaconne in d minor(BWV 1004) and analyzes musical effect of the arrangement for piano compared with the original Bach's work for violin. As a result, when Busoni rearranged Chaconne in d minor(BWV 1004), he accepted tonality, beat, basic harmonic and rhythm patterns of Bach’s original work with addition of notes, measures and various indications that took full advantage of the features of the piano. This leads to find the musical effect which were not shown in the monophony of the violin through tone made by pedal and abundant sound by wide range of sound of piano.
