Recently, a variety of materials have been applied to the Body In White. The use of materials such as aluminum, CFRP and magnesium is on the rise, in addition to the steel materials that were previously used. With this diversification of materials, a new method of joining the BIW will be necessary. For joining BIW, The need for new forms of welding, mechanical joining methods and structural adhesive bonding will be increased. In this study, structural adhesive was studied for the BIW. In order to apply structural adhesive to the BIW, it is very important to evaluate the mechanical and fracture properties of the adhesive. This is because the mechanical and fracture properties of the adhesive can be evaluated to predict the strength of the adhesive bonded area. In this study, specimens were produced by curing hysol E-30CL two part epoxy from Loctite at room temperature. The prepared specimens were evaluated for mechanical properties by tensile testing. In addition, Mode Ⅰ fracture energy of the adhesive layer was assessed by measuring the load, displacement, and length of the crack on the specimen by making a specimen in the form of Double Cantilever Beam using the S45C steel. Tensile testing was carried out based on ASTM D638 for mechanical properties evaluation of cured adhesives. At this time, the adhesive was applied to the metal mode in the form of dog-bone, applying uniform pressure to harden the specimen. The elastic modulus and the maximum tensile strength of the adhesive were verified through tensile test. The elastic modulus of the adhesive was about 1 GPa, and the maximum tensile strength was about 60 MPa. Based on ISO 25217-2, Mode Ⅰ fracture energy of the adhesive layer was evaluated when the steel and steel were bonded with the adhesive. Elastic modulus, maximum tensile strength, and mode Ⅰ fracture energy obtained through tensile and DCB tests were utilized in the FEM analysis. DCB tests were modeled using ABAQUS’s Cohesive Zone Model toe compare test results and analysis results.
