The purpose of this paper is to explore the meaning of a ‘High School Credit System’ based on the ‘Reconceptualization Theory’ suggested by Pinar. In this paper, the theory was chosen because it reminds us of the fundamental meaning of the credit system. According to the characteristics of Pinar’s theory, such as ‘the transition to understanding curriculum’, ‘humanism’, ‘an autobiographical understanding of individuals’, ‘the importance of self-examination and self-knowledge’ and ‘the method of Currere’ etc, the credit system can have new possibilities and educational implications beyond criticism from the existing technical aspects. In this paper, the main meanings of the credit system were examined in terms of purpose, content and method through ‘Reconceptualization’, ‘Meaning of Currere’ and ‘Currere Method’ which are key ideas of Pinar's thought. First, the purpose of the ‘High School Credit System’ is to encourage student to be more independent and intellectual than being technical. In terms of ‘understanding’ the curriculum, the credit system emphasized ‘Subject Selection Right’ and the system was designated that students are the most important factor in the educational situation. Since student had choices of the subjects based on their interests and experiences, they could have been involved to design the curriculum more suitable for them. This provides a deeper perspective on cultural pluralism rather than diversity caused by simple biological differences. Rather than learning the basic common sense required by society, an individual's intellectual interest is at the heart of the educational needs. This means that each learner with different values can develop his or her individual personality and establish his or her career by focusing on the independent selection and happiness of individual students. Second, in terms of content, considering the feature of the ‘High School Credit System’ called individual choice, students reconstruct the meaning of the educational experience, and explore their own curriculum. In addition, this process of autobiographical and electrical understanding involves an emotional change of the individual. This could reflect the meaning of the vivid experiences highlighted in Pinar's ‘Currere’ concept in that it helps to self-encounter through ‘Self-Examination’ and ‘Self-Knowledge’. In the credit system, the subjectivity of choice is meaningful in that it eventually provides the basis for self-understanding. Third, in terms of method, the system is significant in that it uses the current, past, and future reflection stages that can lead to a ‘story of oneself’ that captures the subjectivity of each individual. Pinar's ‘Currere Method’ includes the task of compiling and conceptualizing experience through ‘Regressive’, ‘Progressive’, ‘Analytical’ ‘Synthesis’. Based on the fact that such stories create an incentive to view the curriculum, the credit system shows the educational meaning of a curriculum policy that reflects the entire of an individual's life and develops its individual experiences educationally. This paper sought answers based on Pinar's theory as a way of exploring new meanings for the purpose or essential meaning of the High School Credit System. It presents a new prescription on the direction of the system beyond the quantitatively presented prescriptions such as criteria for course completion, supply-demand problem of teachers, and issues of evaluation.
