One species of Family Hydrobatidae, Swinhoe’s Storm Petrel Oceanodroma monorhis is recorded in Korea. Swinhoe’s Storm Petrel breed most of the world's population on limited uninhabited islands along the southwestern coast of Korea. Especially Chilbal-do Islet is a representative breeding site for Swinhoe’s Storm Petrel in Korea. This survey was conducted from June to November 2017, during the breeding season of Swinhoe’s Storm Petrel, for research on nest-site selection in Chilbal-do, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam Province. 40 quadrat (2×2m) were installed to estimate the breeding density and the breeding population of Swinhoe’s Storm Petrel. We surveyed a total of 154 breeding nests and the breeding density was found to be 0.96 per unit area (1㎡). Therefore, it was estimated that breeding population of Swinhoe’s Storm Petrel in Chilbal-do Islet was 13,494 pairs. A total of 112 eggs were found to have hatched in the 154 breeding nests, and chicks of 110 nests were found to have been successful in fledging. Ratio of hatching success was 72.7%, ratio of fledging success was 98.2%, and ratio of the overall breeding success of Swinhoe’s Storm Petrel was 71.4%. There was a significant difference between the slope attempted breeding and the ratio of breeding success(P<0.05). Comparison of the structural characteristics between the 154 nests used for breeding and the 94 nests not used showed that the burrow used for breeding were significantly deeper than those not used(P<0.001). In addition, after analyzing the effects of structural characteristics of nests used for breeding on ratio of their success, the depth of nests where petrels succeeded in breeding was significantly deeper than those that failed(P<0.05). However, no significant differences were found between the width, depth, height of vegetation at the entrance of breeding nests and ratio of breeding success of petrels. In addition, no significant difference has been found between the location of the breeding nest and ratio of breeding success of petrels. According to this survey, Swinhoe’s Storm Petrel has been found to breed in burrows where the temperature inside the nest is favorable, and deep burrows are preferred. This study, which investigates their nest-site selection according to the structural characteristics and location of nests, may provide basic data for comparison with the results of Swinhoe’s Storm Petrel breeding in other sites in Korea.
