Of the 540 species of birds recorded in Korea, approximately 56.8% are polytypic species, which are classified as two or more species, and some of the taxa have very high similarity in their morphology. As a result, some species lack information on their breeding population status, the distribution of species and subspecies, seasonal migration, habitat utilization, and population dynamics. On Heuksan-do Island and Hong-do Island in Sinan County, which are important stopover sites in East Asia’s migratory birds, we conducted bird banding to the Constant Effort Survey for Horornis diphone, H. canturians, Phylloscopus tenellipes, P. borealoides, Helopsaltes pleskei, H. ochotensis, Emberiza aureola. Morphological parameters were measured in birds after mist-net capturing by play-back experiments. Captured birds were identified based on morphological traits and the molecular phylogenetics through mitochondrial DNA. In addition to these morphological and phylogenetic approaches, distribution status and migration patterns were examined to redefine the taxonomic position. The museum specimens of Cettidae and Chloris sinica were examined to identify interspecies morphological features.
Horornis diphone cantans and H. canturians borealis were distinct in their external colors and measurements. Unlike previous literature, H. canturians borealis were not able to identify its breeding groups in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. This species is a rare summer migrant that breeds mostly around willow trees and reeds, and only in a very limited water-based environment where shrubs formed around a wide valley beneath a mountain in the north of the central part of the Korean Peninsula. Horornis diphone cantans has been confirmed to breed in evergreen deciduous forests in southern islands and coastal areas and the forests of bamboo in southern inland areas. This species has also been confirmed to breed in the shrub forests in the subalpine zone, including Mountains Jiri, Deokyu, Sobaeksan, Odaesan, and Hambaek. Horornis diphone cantans and H. canturians borealis had distinct differences in their breeding ground environment and distribution areas. It is reasonable to classify these birds as two distinct species, not subspecies. There is also a possibility that subspecies borealis and canturians may be synonymous, so further research is needed on the taxonomic position of canturians.
Almost all samples between Helopsaltes pleskei and H. ochotensis were able to distinguish from morphological measurements, including external size, wing formula, length differences among the primary feathers (P1-PC, P2-P4), and feather colors. The breeding group of the Helopsaltes pleskei could not be identified in Ulleung-do island, although subspecies subcerthiola has the potential to pass through. Since the medium characterization between Helopsaltes pleskei and H. ochotensis is identified, efforts to make complementary use of morphological and genetic analyses to identify unknown classifications or hybrids are required. Phylloscopus tenellipes and P. borealoides were not distinguishable from their external colors, but there were distinct in the song patterns during the breeding season. Primary wing formula allowed to distinguish between Phylloscopus tenellipes and P. borealoides with an accuracy of approximately 88.0-94.0%. Phylloscopus tenellipes breeds commonly in highland forests above 900m above sea level, such as Mt. Jiri, Mt. Sobaek, and Mt. Seorak. P. borealoides was identified as a common passenger in spring and autumn.
As a result of reviewing subspecies living in inland and island areas through morphological features and phylogenetic analysis, Chloris sinica was classified into different groups in wing length, bill length, tarsus length, and beak heigh between mainland and Ulleung-do populations. The Ulleung-do population may be a subspecies clarki, an intermediate type between kawarahiba and ussuriensis, but further research is required in detail. The Jeju-do population was classified as subspecies minor based on the geographical distribution, but this population is considered not to be subspecies minor. Samples captured from Busan and Geoje-do island appeared similar in morphology and genetics to the Ulleung-do breeding population. These results could provide information on their seasonal migration pattern, geographical ranges of their movement, and gene flow in some populations.
Emberiza aureola has been uplisted to critically endangered because its global population has extensively declined. Adults showed a complete post-breeding molt, replacing body and flight feathers entirely before the onset of autumn migration over a breeding range. Most of the first-winter birds showed an eccentric primary molt, having molted the 3–4 outermost primaries (P6–P9 or P7–P9) before arriving at the stopover site. More than three types of median wing coverts were identified in the first-winter males, with various plumage colors and patterns. Our results will contribute to an understanding of migration behavior and the subspecies populations that are at risk in their specific environment, which is essential for ecological monitoring to aid in the conservation of this critically endangered species.
Misidentification of museum specimens and genetic information errors have been confirmed in some cases, indicating that species identification should be clarified from morphological features. To solve the taxonomic ambiguity of birds in Korea, the phylogenetic analysis combined with morphological classification should be considered. The establishment of a precise classification for not only endangered species but also commonly distributed species should be prioritized to identify population dynamics due to an increase in risk factors such as illegal poaching, overexploitation, habitat destruction, exotic species, and diseases, and changes in mobility due to climate change.
The establishment of a systematic classification shall be integrated with the study of phylogenetic and morphological analyses. These approaches will contribute to the conservation of biodiversity through systematic protection and management for each taxonomy.
