The Effects of Femininity/Masculinity on Anticipated Social Power : Difference between Appearance and Personality Domains원문보기

In the gender role literature, it has been proved that masculinity is positively associated with social power but femininity is not (Fagenson, 1990; Haines & Kray, 2005; Moss-Racusin, Phelan, & Rudman, 2010). In the current research, I demonstrated that gender norm conformity (i.e., femininity or masculinity) can have differing effects on the perception of social power contingent on domains, so that the effect of gender norm should be explained in certain contexts. Hypotheses were, first, the effects of femininity/masculinity on anticipated social power would be moderated by gender norm domains so that the female target who are feminine in appearance and the male target who are masculine in personality would be anticipated to have higher social power. Second, these effects would be mediated by different attributes (anticipated attractiveness and competence, respectively). In Study 1, as predicted, participants thought a female target whose femininity was diminished in the appearance domain lost anticipated social power more than the female target whose femininity was diminished in the personality domain. However, a parallel effect of masculinity in personality (vs. appearance) on social power for a male target was not observed. Study 2 tested effects of both decrease and increase in femininity/masculinity in the two domains. Same as Study 1, there was a moderate effect of gender norm domain on anticipated social power only for the female target. In Study 3, different manipulations of femininity/masculinity conformity were used and mediation effects were tested. As a result, in consistent with hypothesis 1, femininity in appearance (for the female target) and masculinity in personality (for the male target) predicted attributes of social power. Effects of femininity in appearance and masculinity in personality on anticipated social power were mediated by anticipated attractiveness and competence.
