With the development of information and communication technology, the situation of computer mediated communication(CMC) through media has increased. In the text-based CMC environment, emoticons are used as a means of expressing emotions. As the market value of emoticons increases and various expressions of emoticons are developed, emotional communication using emoticons is increasing. However, as emoticon users convey ambiguous mixed emotions through emoticons, receivers may misinterpret the sender’s message which leads to undesirable misunderstandings. In addition, a guide for emoticon design that meets a target group’s needs and helps users effectively express one’s emotion is currently insufficient. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the expression characteristics of emoticons used by the sender according to the type of emotions they want to convey, and the emotions interpreted by the receiver through transmitted emoticons to understand the process of emotional communication between sender and receiver in the CMC environment. The research methods are divided into four sections: a review of literature, user research, survey, and 1:1 in-depth interview. First, after reviewing the literature of emotional communication and emoticon, we surveyed 25 emoticon users to collect emoticon communication situations and analyzed emoticon usage through user research. After that, the types of animal character emoticons were classified, and related cases were collected to analyze characteristics of each type. Next, expression characteristics of animal character emoticons that are mainly used according to the types of emotions the sender wants to convey and the emotional intensity the receiver interprets according to the expression characteristics of transmitted animal character emoticons were surveyed to 300 emoticon users. Lastly, we conducted a 1:1 in-depth interview with 8 emoticon users to derive the user’s experience relevant to emoticons and the emoticon related needs to supplement the results of the survey in detail. The results and significance of the present study are as follows. First, a user research showed that the relationship with which the emoticons were most frequently exchanged was ‘friend’, and emoticons with different expressions were used according to one’s intimacy with the other. In addition, the receiver tended to interpret the emotion conveyed through emoticon in wide range of emotional intensity according to the expression characteristics of emoticons. While most emoticon studies have focused on sender’s usage of emoticons, this study has significance because it also examines the emotions that are interpreted by receiver through transmitted emoticons. Second, we derived the expression characteristics of the animal character emoticons that are mainly used according to the types of emotions the sender wants to convey. Specifically, when expressing positive emotion, sender used ‘Motion centered animal-human mixed type’ animal character emoticons most often. However, when expressing negative emotion, sender used ‘Animal-like type’ animal character emoticons which show less emotional expression or ‘Facial expression centered animal-human mixed type’ animal character emoticons which show relatively small movements most often to express negative emotions in a smooth manner. In other words, it can be seen that the sender tends to control and express emotions, using different expressions of emoticons by considering the types of emotions and intimacy with the other person. Third, different expressions of emoticons were mainly used according to the gender and age of the sender. Therefore, it is necessary to set a distinct target layer to design an emoticon that satisfies specific needs of target users. For people in their 20s, emoticons with both animal and human characteristics and expresses positive emotions with physical movements can be designed. Also, animal character emoticons that are highly personified and exaggeratedly depict facial expressions and human gestures can be proposed. In addition, for people in their 50s, animal character emoticons with mixed characteristics of animal and human and expresses emotions through facial expressions or physical movements can be designed. Fourth, the receiver interpreted emotions conveyed through emoticons as different emotional intensity according to the expression type of the animal character emoticons. ‘Animal-like type’ animal character emoticons expressing emotions through the appearance and habit description of animals were interpreted as relatively weak emotional intensity. On the other hand, ‘Motion centered animal-human mixed’ animal character emoticons tended to be interpreted as strong emotional intensity. In addition, the receiver tended to interpret positive emotion emoticons focused on the characteristics of expression, while negative emotion emoticons were interpreted in consideration of not only emoticon expressions but also emotional communication situations and intimacy with other person. Lastly, this study synthesized the results of the study and proposed an emotional communication framework through emoticons. When the sender and the receiver encode their emotions or decode the other’s emotions using emoticons, not only ‘the expression of the emoticons’ but also ‘types of emotions’, ‘relationship and intimacy with others’, ‘emotional communication situation’ and ‘the context of using emoticons’ are considered. The emotional communication framework through emoticons suggested in this study will allow users to use and interpret emoticons in consideration of the phased factors of the communication process. In this study, the expression characteristics of emoticons used by the sender and the emotions interpreted by the receiver through transmitted emoticons in emotional communication were investigated focused on the highly preferred animal character emoticons. The results of the study is expected to be helpful to emoticon designers and emoticon users and contribute to future emoticon studies.
