Sustainable fashion is a model that takes into consideration the cultural value required for corporate persistence, coexistence with society and environment, human welfare, and future development. As a result of the production model of fast fashion, it appeared to solve it against the problem caused by the fashion industry. The serious absurdities of the modern fashion industry that lead to issues such as lower self-esteem, distorted body image, and lower personal quality of life by meeting consumers' demands instantly with continuous supply of products in line with rapid change can be overcome through sustainable fashion. Today, consumers, businesses, and governments are highly concerned about sustainability, and many companies, regardless of brand type, are integrating sustainability concepts as part of their products and services. However, inconsistencies between consumer attitudes and behaviors toward sustainability that have been studied for a long time remain unresolved. As a type of consumption that has been explored since the early 1990s, sustainable fashion consumption is still not leading many consumers' purchasing behavior despite the heightened level of consumer awareness. Researchers argue that to resolve this paradox, we need to identify sustainable fashion consumption behaviors by consumer type, while at the same time, that business people have not yet clearly identified the characteristics and consumption behaviors of consumers towards sustainable fashion. Therefore, to resolve the gap between consumers’ attitudes and behaviors toward sustainable fashion, this study identifies the characteristics of categorized consumer types by subdividing consumers and the relationship of consumers' perceived values and purchase intentions for sustainable fashion. The purpose of this study is as follows. First, this study discovers the consumer type according to fashion orientation. Second, this study identifies the demographic characteristics, sustainable fashion consumption experience characteristics, and fashion product selection criteria by consumer type. Third, it reveals the difference in consumers’ perceived value and purchase intention for sustainable fashion by consumer type. Fourth, this study examines the relationship between consumers' perceived value and purchase intention in sustainable fashion by consumer type. As for this research, an on-line survey was conducted by the 20s and total of 273 responses were used for analysis. For the data analysis, descriptive statistics (frequency, %), factor analysis, reliability analysis, cluster analysis, variance analysis, χ²- test, and multiple regression analysis were used by utilizing the SPSS 25.0 program. The result of this study was as follows: First, three types of consumers were derived based on fashion orientation. These include the high fashion involved group who is active and highly involved in fashion, the middle fashion involved group that has a moderate tendency to fashion, and the low fashion involved group who is passive and low involvement in fashion. Second, this study examined the differences in demographic characteristics, sustainable fashion consumption experience characteristics, and fashion product selection criteria. The high fashion involved group showed the highest level of monthly fashion spending and purchase time and the highest level of awareness and experience of sustainable fashion. The type of consumer considered that design/color, price, quality/wearing, brand reputation / trend, and brand's ethical contribution are important compared to other types. The middle fashion involved group and the low fashion involved group showed a moderate and low level of monthly fashion spending and purchase time, and the level of awareness and experience of sustainable fashion was lower than that of high fashion involved group. As for the selection criteria of fashion products, price and quality/wearing were considered important for both the middle and low fashion involved groups. Third, this study identified the difference between consumers' perceived value and purchase intention for sustainable fashion by consumer type. The high fashion involved group showed higher level of perception in the functional, emotional, financial, social and epistemic values and purchase intention of sustainable fashion than other types. Consumers in the middle fashion involved group perceived the functional, emotional, and epistemic value of sustainable fashion relatively high, and the level of purchase intention was also high. The low fashion involved group showed lower levels of consumers' perceived value and purchase intention for sustainable fashion compared to other types. Fourth, the relationship between perceived value and purchase intention of sustainable fashion by consumer types was verified. The high fashion involved groups showed positive purchase intentions by perceiving social and epistemic values for sustainable fashion. Consumers in the middle fashion involved group showed positive purchase intention by perceiving functional value, emotional value and social value, and in the case of low fashion involved group, purchase intention in sustainable fashion products through perception of functional value and financial value was indicated. As a result, for the high fashion involved group, it is necessary to present a variety of information and to use storytelling-based campaigns or participatory campaigns as marketing strategies so that curiosity and knowledge can be accumulated while shopping for sustainable fashion products. For the middle fashion involved group, it is important to emphasize the practicality of sustainable fashion products, deliver fun elements to enjoy shopping, and provide opportunities to build a positive social image through cause marketing that does not require much effort. For the low fashion involved group, it is expected that it would be effective to deliver the superior quality of the price of sustainable fashion products in the form of rational messages rather than abstract and ambiguous messages. This study has an academic implication in that this study used the fashion orientation as a key concept for consumer segmentation, analyzed the characteristics of each consumer type, and explained consumption behavior for sustainable fashion in relation to the results. In addition, to overcome the limitations of previous studies, the perceived value and purchase intentions of sustainable fashion were used to identify the causes of the gaps between attitudes and behaviors toward sustainable fashion by consumer type. This is meaningful in that it contributed to resolving the paradox of sustainable fashion that remained a long time. This study has practical implications in that it suggests a marketing strategy by type of consumer to sustainable fashion companies by looking at sustainable fashion consumption behavior by consumer types. As many fashion companies are using the notion of sustainability as their core marketing strategy, the results of this study suggest a practical way of how marketers communicate with consumers. Also, this research identified the types of consumers who are more receptive to sustainable fashion by identifying the level of perceived value and purchase intention toward sustainable fashion by consumer type. These results can be a reference for determining the target consumer groups when launching a sustainable fashion brand, and it can be used as a basis for planning a long-term approach to potential consumers and securing them as actual buyers.
