The aim of this study is to examine the effects of breathing techniques at the time of pilates reformer footwork exercise muscle activity and the balance ability of the trunk and legs within and between the groups prior to and after the exercise. 31 adult women over 20 years of age were selected as the subjects of this study and were divided into a pilates breathing group (n=15) and an general breathing group (n=16) following a randomized control group study design method. The pilates breathing group performed reformer footwork exercise after having been provided instructions on and undergoing 10 minutes of practice of the breathing methods from a skilled trainer while the general breathing group performed exercise by using the breathing methods they normal used without intervention on their breathing methods. Surface electromyogram was used to measure the muscle activity within and between the groups prior to and after the reformer footwork exercise by measuring the level of activation of the trunk and leg muscles over the time for which the subjects pushed the jumping board and returned. For measurement of the static balance ability, two leg support with eyes open, two leg support with eyes closed, and one leg support were all measured by using pressure distribution measurement platforms for the measurement of surface area ellipse. Meanwhile, dynamic balance ability was measured by using a Dynamic Balance. All measurements were taken three times and their average values were used for analysis. In order to check the average differences in muscle activity, static balance, and dynamic balance prior to and after the exercise within each group, a paired t–test was conducted, while an independent t–test was used to compare the extent of changes in examining the muscle activity, static balance, and dynamic balance prior to and after the exercise between the two groups. SPSS 18.0 was used for statistical processing of the data with a significance level (α) of .05. Regarding the results of the study, muscle activity increased with significant differences in the external oblique muscle, internal oblique muscle, transverse abdominal muscle, vastus medialis oblique muscle, vastus lateralis oblique muscle, and tibialis anterior muscle after the exercise in the pre–post exercise comparison within the pilates breathing group (p<0.05). In the intergroup comparison, there was a significant difference in the increase in the muscle activity of the external oblique muscle, transverse abdominal muscle, vastus medialis oblique muscle, and vastus lateralis oblique muscle in the pilates breathing group (p<0.05). In the pre–post comparison of static balance within the pilates breathing group, the surface area ellipse after the exercise was reduced with significant difference (p<0.05). The pilates breathing group also displayed a reduction in the surface area ellipse with significant differences even in the intergroup comparison (p<0.05). In the pre–post comparison of dynamic balance within the pilates breathing group, the dynamic balance score increased after the exercise with significant difference (p<0.05). The pilates breathing group also displayed an increase in the score for the dynamic balance ability with a significant difference even in the intergroup comparison (p<0.05). As for the result of this study, it was confirmed that reformer footwork exercise accompanied by pilates breathing has affirmative effects on muscle activity, and static and dynamic balance ability of trunk and leg muscles in adult women. Therefore, reformer footwork exercise accompanied by pilates breathing can be presented as an effective exercise method in increasing the stability of the trunk and improving balance ability through simultaneous activity of the trunk and leg muscles.
