As environmental problems related to fossil fuels have emerged internationally, there has been growing interest in biofuels that can replace them. One promising option is to produce renewable biodiesel from microalgae biomass. The direct-transesterification is a biodiesel production process from microalgae that conducts conversion and extraction simultaneously using either acid or base catalyst. Although glycerol and microalgal residue produced after the process can cause secondary contamination problem, anaerobic digestion can be an eco-friendly process that can effectively convert those wastes into bioenergy. In this study, biodiesel was extracted from wastewater-treated microalgae using direct transesterification and compared with microalgae biodiesel recovered in artificial media. It also investigates how biodiesel production is affected by biomass by-products. Biomass grown in wastewater improves biodiesel production by removing inhibitory organic matters. To recover additional energies, biochemical methane potential (BMP) test was performed to evaluate the methane recovery potential from the glycerol by-products, and the effect of anaerobic digestion on the catalyst was also compared. The biodiesel yield of microalgae cultured by BG-11 artificial medium was 5.8-7.2% and the yield of wastewater treated biomass was 50% lower than that. It was confirmed by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) that the inhibitory factor was an extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) component of microalgae generated during the treatment of wastewater. Biomass washing pretreatment with NaCl was applied prior to biodiesel extraction to remove the EPS components. As a result, the biodiesel of the wastewater treated microalgae after washing was confirmed to increase to 80%. Monitored biogas recovery by anaerobic digestion of glycerol by-product was about 288.9 mL/g COD in total, close to the theoretical value, but the difference in methane production was found to be due to the catalyst used in the transesterification process. Easily biodegradable materials, such as methanol or other residual organic materials, were immediately converted to methane. Subsequently, slowly hydrolyzed glycerol was converted to methane to obtain nonlinear regression results. The calculated energy potential at the biodiesel from microalgae was 18.9 kJ while additional 1.9 kJ could be recovered from additional biogas production using by-products. The proposed method contributes to maximizing the biodiesel potential of biomass harvested from wastewater treatment by removing inhibitors. The convergence of biodiesel production process and biogasification can be a viable option to reduce secondary contamination by residual by-product and increase energy recovery.
