Art education helps students interact with others and understand other cultures and people by nurturing their ability to understand and manage the emotions and inspirations of themselves and others. Students also have a chance to experience and create a variety of art fields. This allows students to learn how to communicate with people using materials, tools, methods and principles for various art creations. In countries where art education is developed, various subdomains of art including dance, theater and film, music and fine art, are taught from the primary school level so as to expose students to rich artistic experiences. In the case of France, various arts domains such as space art, everyday art, language art, sound art, performance art, visual arts are incorporated into art education in the upper grades of primary school.
In the case of Korea, student learning is confined to academic music and fine art, which poses limitations to having various artistic experiences in the context of art education. The reasons are as follows. First, the domain of art education is narrowly defined within the national curriculum. Second, as music and fine art subjects overly emphasize academic logic, there lacks consideration for linking and integrating the subject with various art genres. Third, various arts genres are incorporated into existing textbooks as units, subjects and materials, but not enough class hours are guaranteed to give students the effect of art education. Fourth, although some schools teach students various art fields as part of culture and art education, this is not part of common education for all primary school students. In other words, the right to learn is determined by school principal’s policies.
Difficulty in providing students with educational opportunities in various domains of art in schools is essentially due to a lack of discussions on what should be taught in art education in the context of the national curriculum. Therefore, this study attempts to present a proper art education plan for upper grade primary school students through the development of national curriculum standards for Multi dimensional Art Education.
This study aims to suggest a multi dimensional art education for the higher grade students of primary schools based on the demands of society, educators and curriculum. The aim of multi dimensional art education is to provide a diverse art experience that is reflective of the students’ artistic talents, aptitude and preferences, and to allow access to subjects like artience (convergence of art and science/technology), which was previously difficult to find in schools. this thesis has attempted to develop national curriculum standards for multi dimensional art education in primary schools to help students unravel their talents and aptitude, explore career options in art, and develop an appreciation for art. The National Curriculum Standards for Multi dimensional Art Education in Primary Schools presented provides general, universal, and classic standards for executing multi dimensional art education. Therefor The students in turn, will have access to diverse fields of art through this multi dimensional art education, and such experience will help them to build imagination, creativity, cooperative skills and communication skills.
The main research questions explored in the current study are as follows:
1) What to include in our national curriculum standards for Multi dimensional Art Education in primary school?
2) How to build and develop national curriculum standards for Multi dimensional Art Education in primary school?
First of all, to draft the National Curriculum Standards for Multi dimensional Art Education, the significance of multi dimensional art education, as well as its stature and role as a school curriculum were examined. The art curriculums of both domestic and overseas primary schools were analyzed, and those qualities that were identified as the significant and basic concepts of multi dimensional art education were extracted. Based on these findings, the researcher set out the educational aims of our National Curriculum Standards, as well as its scope and range, objectives for each of the art categories, the areas it will cover, standards for teaching, learning and evaluation, and standards on the coordination, operation and support of these education programs.
Next, the National Curriculum Standards was constructed and polished to the highest degree of perfection through the five stages of a preliminary draft, initial version, revised version, and final version, using the methodology set out by the Bridging Curriculum Standards. The resulting final version is laid out as follows: Section 1 covers the ‘Aims and Objectives of Multi dimensional Art Education in Primary Schools,’. Section 2 covers ‘Standards for Fourth to Sixth Grade Multi dimensional Art Education,’. And section 3 covers ‘Planning, Execution, and Support of Multi dimensional Art Education in Primary Schools.’
The following research methods and processes were employed for this study. First, domestic and overseas art curriculums were analyzed for a theoretical investigation and based on the conclusions drawn forth, a rough sketch of our National Curriculum Standards for multi dimensional art education in primary schools was made. A preliminary draft was written up, which was turned into an initial version by incorporating the results of the first focus group interview(FGI) and expert surveys. The initial version was then polished into a revised version based on the findings from the second round of expert surveys, and a final version was constructed after a second FGI. Finally, the polished final version was reconstructed as a ‘practical version’ for application to the 2015 Revised Korean National Curriculum.
The ‘National Curriculum Standards for Multi dimensional Art Education in Primary Schools’ is composed of three chapters and the appendix. The key points of the finalized National Curriculum Standards for multi dimensional art education are as follows. Chapter 1 serves as the curriculum platform, and covers the aims and objectives of multi dimensional art education in primary schools. It explains the background of multi dimensional art education and its purpose, as well as its nature, visions, values and goals. Here, the conventional music and fine art education centered on theoretical knowledge is defined as ‘onedimensional art education’ and the broadspectrum art education that considers artistic aptitude and talents of students as ‘multi dimensional art education.’ In the background and the purpose of multi dimensional art education, the various changes and developments that have taken place in the modern art landscape are mentioned, which point to a need for an expanded art education. The section on the nature of the multi dimensional art education covers the diversification of the art domain, along with the introduction of new art domains, fusion art education (via media convergence), and development of multiple intelligence. This is followed by the key points of the curriculum, which emphasizes that multi dimensional art education is all about giving students access to the various domains of art at school, which the conventional art education often fails to do.
Chapter 2 of the National Curriculum Standards for multi dimensional art education presents a detailed curriculum framework. Here, the aims of the multi dimensional art education for fourth to sixth graders are explained, and standards are provided on the different art domains, content areas, curriculum organization and time allocation. The aims section lists goals that are tailored for fourth and sixth graders, as well as the overarching goals for the multi dimensional art education in general. In the identification of art domains, ‘art’ is categorized into three areas: main domains, subdomains, and activities domains for multi dimensional art education. The main domains include three fields of fundamental art, media art and composite art; the sub domain includes 11 genres of music, fine art, traditional Korean music, dance, theater, design, film, photography, manga/animation, applied music, and other applied arts; finally, a further 47 activities are identified as domains for multi dimensional art education. In the content area, the curriculum is subdivided into three areas of the understanding of art, creation and expression, and appreciation and communication. Finally, the section for curriculum organization and time allocation suggests introducing modules, block time scheduling, and epoch activities to complement the limitations of the traditional 40 minute periods. Ways to converge art education with other subjects, such as with Korean and physical subjects, are also suggested.
Chapter 3 provides the national curriculum standards, and covers the coordination, execution and support of multi dimensional art education in primary schools. The section on coordination and execution covers teaching and learning methods, and a project based cooperative learning approach is suggested. In the section for evaluation, a processcentric evaluation method is proposed, which combines observational evaluation by teachers, activity sheets, and selfevaluation by students. The section on curriculum support covers practice standards, equipments and facilities, areas for support, and quality control. As a way of supplementing the lack of equipments and facilities for multi dimensional art education at schools, specialized artplay trucks are also proposed. Here, artplaytrucks refer to those vehicles that are equipped with specific tools and facilities, and which make visits to schools in a target region. In addition to these suggestions, different roles and responsibilities are proposed for the government, the Ministry of Education and the district offices of education, to support multi dimensional art education. Other possible methods of support are also included, such as utilizing the various cultural facilities of local governments and communities for the smooth running of the curriculum.
In the appendix, a detailed plan for adopting our National Curriculum Standards for multi dimensional art education to the 2015 Revised Korean National Curriculum is included. By proposing a way to converge achievement standards for primary schools with codes of multi dimensional art education, we show how the current curriculum and the multi dimensional art education curriculum can be conjoined. Next, a sample teaching schedule was also drafted. This should give an idea of how the multi dimensional art curriculum can be coordinated and run for fourth to sixth grade students, in terms of curriculum organization and time allocation. Finally, this study has also suggested a sample rotation chart for artplaytrucks, which will hopefully make up for the insufficient equipments and facilities at schools. The targets of the sample rotation chart are primary schools in the Junggu district, who are seeing a rapid decline in the number of students due to extreme hollowization. Through this sample rotation chart, this study shows the feasibility and validity of multi dimensional art education. For all these reasons described above, our National Curriculum Standards for Multi dimensional Art Education in Primary Schools may serve to expand and reinforce art education of a broader spectrum.
The conclusions of this study are as follows. First of all, this study has proposed an multi dimensional art curriculum that goes beyond aural and visual art, allowing students to access and experience a broader spectrum of art. This includes art that uses body interaction, spatial art, and art that utilizes advanced media. Through this multi dimensional art education, fourth to sixth grade students will be able to experience the various domains of art as part of their art education curriculum, and develop artistic aptitude and talent.
Secondly, the concept of modules was introduced to guarantee a certain amount of time for exploring the different domains of art, which had previously been covered as a subtheme or a subunit of another subject’s curriculum. Epoch activities and blocktime scheduling were also suggested for a smooth execution. We have already seen through previous studies, that a set amount of time needs to be guaranteed for effective teaching and learning in different art domains like photography, film, dance and theater. This study advises assigning six to eight modules for each of the art domains for an effective multi dimensional art education.
Thirdly, we have proposed a plan to incorporate our Curriculum standards into the 2015 Revised Korean National Curriculum, by conjoining the achievement standards for art in each of the existing curriculums with our standards. As for the cases where the inclusion and execution of multi dimensional art education may prove to be difficult due to the insufficient equipments and facilities, we have also proposed operating special artplaytrucks. A sample rotation was included to increase the feasibility of including multi dimensional art education into the current curriculum, and to help schools to draft up an actual curriculum for their own multi dimensional art education.
Further suggestions drawn from this study are as follows. First, the national curriculum standards for Multi dimensional Art Education in Primary Schools should be tailored according to the different levels of the students. This study was based on the findings of previous research which showed that the first adoption of new curriculums occur at primary schools. Our National Curriculum Standards was established to include multi dimensional art as a general arts subject and thus guarantee our students’ educational rights. The conclusions of our study show that multi dimensional art education is feasible and valid within the current curriculum framework. This calls for further study, this time to establish national curriculum standards for multi dimensional art education in secondary schools. However, this will require a medium to longterm strategy with deepened contents for its coordination and execution.
Secondly, short term, medium term and long term project strategies may be employed to execute multi dimensional art education. This study suggests allocating six to eight module periods to run the curriculum like a project, conjoining it with the achievement standards of the existing national curriculum. Through this approach, a key project may run by dividing it into multiple shortterm programs. Here, the key project refers to those mid to long term projects that have been implemented into the existing curriculum, tailored for the core competencies and achievement standards it describes. The implementation of a key project which will develop the core competencies of multi dimensional art education will lead to further suggestions for short to longterm projects.
Thirdly, for the smooth execution of multi dimensional art education, close cooperation between teachers and the artists is necessary. Primary school teachers are responsible for the education and guidance of their pupils that are appropriate to their level of development. Therefore, they have a good grasp of their students’ talents, capabilities and aptitude. On the other hand, artists may have expertise in art, but they are unable to identify the characteristics of each school and each student in the little time and interaction that they have. For this reason, coteaching by the teachers and the artists will lead to smoother execution of lessons, as teachers and artists work to set teaching directions and key the class to the needs of students. With the help of the teacher, the artist can tailor the content areas to meet the students’ level. As for the teacher, by participating in the class as an assistant or an observer, they will have more time for making detailed observations and processcentric evaluations.
This study aims to develop national curriculum standards for multi dimensional art education in primary schools, so that students will have access to a wider range of art in building their aptitude and talents, and go on to explore related career options. Through this multi dimensional art education, students will have the opportunity to discover and develop their aptitude and talents in different art domains, and come to appreciate art. It is the hope of this study to see many art talents come to develop a lifelong appreciation of art. Furthermore, the researcher hopes this will lessen the burden for families in regards to private art lessons, and enhance our nation’s position in art so that one day, art education in Korea will attract international talents from overseas.
