This study sought to identify the processing of orthographic and phonological information involved in the reading of English words by late Korean-English bilinguals. In Experiment 1, two reading tasks (word naming task, lexical decision task) were used to investigate whether late bilinguals utilize grapheme-phoneme correspondence rule, which could affect the speed and accuracy of English word reading. The results of the word naming task showed an interaction between word frequency and regularity condition and the statistical significance of the word frequency effect in all conditions. A significant level of word regularity effect was reported only in low-frequency word conditions, which is partially consistent with the results reported in existing studies (Jared, McRae, & Seidenberg, 1990). In the lexical decision task, only word frequency effect was significant, and no word regularity effect or interaction between the two conditions was observed. Such results are consistent with the preceding study (Seidenberg, Waters, Barnes, & Tanenhaus,1984), as an observation of frequency effect is typical in the lexical decision task, which requires relatively less activation of phonological information. Therefore, if the results of Experiment 1 are interpreted using the dual-route model, one of the major visual word reading models, it could be concluded that Korean-English speakers also use word regularity information like native English speakers when processing English words. However, a tentative conclusion was made that the use of word regularity information occurs mainly through a direct lexical path based on spelling rather than an indirect phonological path based on the activation of phonological information. In other words, late Korean-English bilinguals process the orthographic information in the lexical stage similarly to native English speakers, but process phonological information differently. The objective of Experiment 2 was to examine whether the cause of the partial difference in the results of English word reading by late Korean-English bilinguals in Experiment 1 and by native English speakers in the previous study lies in the processing of phonological and orthographic at the sub-lexical stage. It has been reported that phonological representation takes place in both lexical and sub-lexical stages when late bilinguals process visual words (Dijkstra & Van Heuven, 2002). It is also said that phonological representation in the sub-lexical stage plays a key role and that second language proficiency has an influence when reading words in the second language. Therefore, in Experiment 2 two judgment tasks (rhyme judgment task, spell judgment task) were conducted in conjunction with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the effect of the second language (English) proficiency on neurological processing of orthographic and phonological representation in Korean-English late bilinguals. Korean-English late bilinguals were divided into high proficiency, intermediate, and low proficiency groups according to second language proficiency. Brain images were obtained while participants performed rhyme and spell judgment tasks on visually presented English word stimuli. The behavioral results revealed that unlike native English speakers, all three groups responded more quickly and accurately in the spell judgment task than in the rhyme judgment task. However, the accuracy results of the high proficiency group showed the tendency of phonological information interfering with the processing of spelling information during the spell judgment task, just as in those of native English speakers. In the fMRI results, areas related to language processing as reported by prior studies (IFG, PC, MTG, STG, SMG, IFG) and areas related to other cognitive processing such as attention and working memory (dLPFC, SMA, PMC, Hippocampus) were observed. However, the activation of areas related to other cognitive processing instead of language was more pronounced as English proficiency was lower. The result that the high proficiency group showed activation in areas other than those relevant to language concurs with that of existing studies on late bilinguals (Inderfrery, 2006; Cargnelui, Tomasino, & Fabro, 2019). In the Region of Interest analysis, the accuracy in the rhyme judgment task showed a positive correlation to the pSTG and RO area of the left hemisphere, related to the processing of phonological information. The accuracy in the spelling judgment task had a negative correlation with the pSTG of the right hemisphere, and RO and putamen area of the left hemisphere, associated with phonological processing. In other words, Korean-English late bilinguals use phonological information like native English speakers in reading English words, but the degree differs by English proficiency; the lower the proficiency is the more involved non-linguistic cognitive processing including attention, inhibition, and short-term memory.
