In this study, patients with schizophrenia, really difficult to treat in modern medicine, were selected as participants. The purpose of this study is to collect and analyze the experiences they went through, in order to understand what the lives of chronic schizophrenic patients are like, and then to carry out Poetry Therapy on the implications. This study aims to seek psycho-social rehabilitation of patients with chronic schizophrenia. For this purpose, this study explored "what the chronic schizophrenic patients (especially Christian patients) have experienced in their lives" and "what the phenomena and therapeutic factors of experiences of Poetry Therapy are". In carrying out the research, the researcher used two methodological approaches. First, as a phenomenological approach, which is the main tradition of qualitative research, this study applied the approach of Giorgi (1997) and that of Colaizzi (1978) to this study. And pastoral theological reflection by Miller-McLemore's 'Living Human Web' paradigm was applied as a secondary approach so as to interpret the phenomena revealed earlier and connect them with practical alternatives for effective Christian counseling. First of all, the data analysis on 'life experienced by chronic schizophrenic patients' was applied by Giorgi's (1997) phenomenological research method. As a result, 17 sub-components and 7 components were derived. The seven components are , , , , and , , . As a result of exploring these components, the lives experienced by the Christian schizophrenic participants are summarized as 'living a lonely life without hope and suffering prejudice and discrimination after developing the schizophrenia through the crisis of life, and then enduring the life with God after accepting Him as the Absolute and relying on Him.' The data analysis on the experience of Poetry Therapy of chronic schizophrenic patients following the study on life experienced by patients with chronic schizophrenia was carried out by the phenomenological method of Colaizzi (1978). The study on the Poetry Therapy of chronic schizophrenic patients attempted to find out phenomenologically what the participants' personal and subjective Poetry Therapy experience was. As a result, 112 constitutive meanings, 30 themes, and 13 thematic groups were derived. Based on the 13 thematic groups, participants were found to have experienced the following during the course of Poetry Therapy. Participants exhibited various during the course of Poetry Therapy. Also, , , , , , , , , , , , and were found during the course. In addition, the seven therapeutic factors were revealed as , , , ,, , and . Taken together, the research participants have negative emotions and self-images due to painful traumatic experiences and to symptoms of disease, and they go through identity confusion, disconnection of relationship, and distortions of reality caused by self-alienation and social prejudice and stigma. And also, their lives are observed to be led by the lethargic, less-functional lives brought about by the lack of hope. In the poetic space, as participatory interaction with them, participants found out the meanings of the group-based therapy, experiencing therapeutic factors such as 'comfort, catharsis, transition, understanding, communication, growth, and hope'. The core of the meaning of poetry therapy experienced by them is 'the recovery of relationship and self-discovery through poetry'; in other words, it is summarized as 'relieving trauma, restoring positive emotions, restoring self-esteem and identity, understanding self and others, improving relations, awareness of reality, discovery of dreams', and ultimately, "finding hope for their lives." Through qualitative research, it proves that Poetry Therapy is effective and valuable as one of the significant supplementary programs to promote psycho-emotional change and social adaptation, including patients' inner healing and emotional recovery, within the scope of drug treatment. Based on these findings, the conclusion presents practical suggestions of Christian (pastoral) counseling for patients with chronic schizophrenia, who are alienated from the society. Also, it suggests the implications for emotional change, social adaptation, and rehabilitation through Poetry Therapy and the follow-up studies. This study is significant in that the poetry therapy group grogram was designed and operated for the purpose of chronic schizophrenic patients' change and growth, based on their specific lives, thereby exploring in depth the essence and meaning of the Poetry Therapy experience. The study is expected to contribute to helping psycho-social rehabilitation by improving negative symptoms such as by recovering their impaired emotions and self-esteem, and improving interpersonal skills through in-depth understanding of chronic schizophrenic patients and indirect counseling tools such as Poetry Therapy.
